Windows 10: Windows 10 and MS Office 2007

Hi all - I have run into an unusual problem and would like to know if you'd have a suggestion (I have used the Search function but nothing useful turned up).

I just got a new laptop with Windows 10 (Build 18363.1379), with all required updates as of 2/21/21.
I installed MS Office 2007 on it.
I put shortcuts for Word and PowerPoint on my desktop and they work fine.
The shortcut for Excel does not work and gives me an error which basically says that Excel cannot launch because file msvcr80.dll is missing.
Double-clicking on an existing Excel file returns the same error.

So I Google the problem and re-install Office 2007, then download and install the required versions of MS Visual C++;
Excel still won't launch.

Poking around the 'net, somebody suggested doing a Windows key + R, then type "Excel" and hit OK.
Surprisingly, it works and Excel opens up.

Has anybody run into this problem, or would you have an explanation for this behavior?

Microsoft Office Enterprise 2007

This is my list of installed Office 2007 updates [Control panel, Programs & features, View installed updates]



- I have installed Office 2007 Word, Excel, PowerPoint & Access.
- If you have installed other Office 2007 components you will find others shown in your own list of installed updates [once you are fully up to date].

I suggest saving copies of each one now in case they are ever removed from the MS update catalog downloads lists.

- Just download the updates shown in your own list of installed updates rather than the whole list provided by the MS update catalog because the catalog includes ones that were subsequently superceded by others.
- SP3, which was a major update that established a new beginning for Office 2007 and upon which all further updates were based, is also described in Description of the 2007 Office suite SP3 and of Office Language Pack 2007 SP3 and the article also provides a download link for it
- If I reinstall Office, I work through the updates list in KB numerical order starting with SP3

MS Office 2007 word not working

what build do you have installed?

I have been using Office 2007 on windows 10 and only experienced any issues when I upgraded to build 15014.

having reset windows and reinstalled Office 2007 (and everything else) and Office 2007 is working without issue.

I have since installed build 15019 and office 2007 continues to behave.

Office 2007 is 10 years old, and operating systems have moved on, it is not unreasonable to expect problems with old software, more so in the later (insider) builds.

MS are not purposely blocking Office 2007 but nor are they putting effort into keeping very old versions of programs compatible - it costs time and money and impacts on the functionality of the OS.

you can reinstall windows 8.1 from the original media or, as srfeeman suggested, contact the equipment manufacturer.
