Windows 10: Windows 10 anniversary update - error code 0x8007001f

Hi all,
I cannot update to Windows 10 anniversary update. I get the 0x8007001f error code.

Well, "download ISO" is one way to go about it, as cereberus mentioned and linked. You can also use the Media Creation Tool (HowToGeek has a VERY THOROUGH writeup about it). There's also a program you can run to pull a specific ISO file, from HeiDoc.net. I recommend HeiDoc's tool.

What version of windows are you currently running? Execute "winver" in the run dialog.

 

Using many sources I've compiled a list of things to try. One or more of them fixed my issue so if you don't want to waste time, it's a good idea to do them all (in order) - unless you're a scientist, then by all means, go ahead find the exact answer ;-)

• Uninstall all High Definition Audio Drivers (In Device Manager)
• In Windows Update settings, set to never check for updates
• Stop and disable the "Windows Update Service" (in Services manager)
• Rename C:\$WINDOWS.~BT (Could be ~WS or other) to something else
• Restart Computer
• Retry Windows 10 Upgrade

You can also try other things like disable your Antivirus program etc... if this doesn't work.

Also, after the reboot you should make sure all the settings you changed are still there.

I find it absolutely inexcusable that after all these years, where Microsoft was able to update operating systems without the interference of drivers and anti-virus programs, that suddenly their installation/upgrades for Windows 10 would be rife with these problems.

I mean, to have to manually shut off Microsoft services just to get it to install an update properly? Microsoft's OWN software? It's ludicrous.

I was able to install up from the old 10240 to the newer version 1511, build 10586.589 (April 2016) using an ISO file. THAT WORKED! Update went rather smoothly, although a bit long (almost 90 mins).

Then... after a few days, I decided to try installing the Windows 10 Update Assistant and let it give the Anniversary Update another go with an "automatic" download. Well... after a very long and arduous nearly 2 HOURS, it failed. FAILED! It threw that cryptic blue screen STOP CODE with IRQL NOT LESS OR EQUAL. You'd figure that if there was SOME software or driver somewhere in the system conflicting with the installation that Microsoft could figure it out way ahead of time and flag the install from proceeding... rather than wasting so much time. I think it's a coding screw-up in the installer... nothing to do with what 3rd party software is residing on the computer. WHY? Well... it has happened to 2 of my HP laptops and they have different sets of software installed, different drivers, etc. The only notable thing in common is the Microsoft Office 365 productivity suite.

So, I'm staying with 1511. At least I'm not on that old antiquated first release. I'll wait for Microsoft to make some progress in fixing this mess before I attempt to waste any more of my time.
