    Windows 10 Automatic Updates

    Hi Folks,

Windows 10 decided to install updates after I had finished for the night. Updates not installed correctly, and unable to access computer. Cannot use SAFEMODE to remove latest update as, actual SAFEMODE screen not visible, as presumably still "showing" on multiple monitors and not on actual computer.
    1. Any suggestions?
    2. Can use Command Prompt: Does anyone know the command prompt command if there is one, to set monitor display default for main computer (I am running Surface Pro full computer)?
    3. Is it possible to create startup disk, and be able to see SAFEMODE screen in this way?

Any help and suggestions truly appreciated?

    :)

    window's 10 automatic updates

    Hi Jean,

The idea of your concern pertains to really the automatic updates feature in Windows. When downloading of updates is done, your computer should not reboot automatically unless the
Active hours option in the Settings is not set. Check it out. To do so, see the steps below:

    • Press Windows key and type "Windows Update" in; then, choose "Check for updates". The Windows Update window should appear.
    • Under "Windows Update", you'll see the "Change active hours" at the bottom.

I absolutely agree with DullRazr. The answer is ambiguous, prolix and unhelpful. I am reluctant to purchase a Windows 10 machine for cellular network use until I get a satisfactory answer, which evidently, is unlikely to come from Microsoft channels. I have
already decided against a Windows Phone and am considering the Chrome OS.

Thanks very much for this, this is very much appreciated. I am able to go through the normal screen flow and select STARTUP SETTINGS, and then press 4 for SAFEMODE. The problem is I cannot see the SAFEMODE Screen, as there is only a blank screen on my actual computer, and I think this is because the SAFEMODE screen is trying to display itself on one of my multiple monitors - so it literally cannot be seen. I am not sure that using Command Prompt will solve this by just trying to access SAFEMODE through Command Prompt as it may still just display on the multiple monitors. What I need to do is change things so that my computer is the Main Monitor Display. As it may still display the SAFEMODE screen on one of my multiple monitors, and not on the actual computer - the Surface Pro. What I am trying to do is to make the Surface Pro computer the default Monitor for SAFEMODE, and I was wondering if there was a way to do this using COMMAND Prompt. I haven't been able to look through everything you have so kindly provided yet, so if that has already been explained, I apologise.

Thanks to everyone for your kind help.

What happens if you unplug the extra monitors? I would expect it to default to your screen as it will be the only one available*Smile

The key combo for switching from multi to single monitor is the windows logo key *Start + P then the up down arrow key. If it's currently in extend, up arrow twice, then enter, will select PC screen only.

My apologies for taking so long to come back to this. I needed a working computer so I bought one, and I have been resetting up programs etc. So a long process. I put this on the backburner simply because I am not sure, using any of the approaches to trying to open in safemode, will solve my problem. The central issue is making my Surface Pro the main monitor; the default monitor. I have turned it off, and left it off a number of times, for some time, hoping that the computer would somehow simply default to the Surface Pro as the main monitor. This did not happen, and I am no further advanced.

The idea of the key combination is interesting, but I imagine this only works when you can actually start your computer and go to the desktop. I cannot do that. What I need to do is set the default, and I assume this is the only way, by using command prompt. But I don't know how to do this, or if it is possible at all.

I am coming back to the idea that I will have no choice but to do a complete clean install. Hence, the concentration on setting up a new computer. My thinking: If I have to setup the computer again, why not do this with a more powerful and recent machine - I have the original Surface Pro.

Having said that, I desperately want to get to the information on my Surface Pro hard drive, but I imagine this is part of the mother board, and not simply a matter of popping it into an external case, treating it as just another external hard drive.

Truly, any suggestions very much appreciated.
