Windows 10: Windows 10 back up fail

Hi. Windows 10 acts like it's backing up my files to an external hard drive but after taking hours to do so tells me the backup failed.


If I go into just plain backup, backup options, and backup now, for a couple seconds it appears to be working, but then just blinks back to its original state as if I never asked it to backup in the first place. In other words, that feature does absolutely nothing.


I've tried several times to use the Backup and Restore (Windows 7). This is where it will take hours to back things up, then tell me it failed. I've tried figuring out why and one time it told me there might be a virus on the external hard drive. I've scanned that drive with multiple programs and nothing was found.


Like many, I feel that I've spent an entire year of my life trying to solve Microsoft glitches. Why won't this work? Is there reliable third party software that will back up my PC? Or do I have to just copy and paste all the files I hope to save?


This is truly maddening. This should be very simple. There is plenty of space on the external. I've used this external for years. This should work like it always has.

Windows 10 fails to update


When you finish testing the Avast suggestion, make sure that you restart your machine.

Then if the issue persists, please return to the trouble shooting list in post# 89

I think there are three steps that remain; the WU troubleshooter, reset WU components, and manual WU reset.

 

Windows 10 Tweaks

Pressing “Windows+Pause Break” (it’s up there next to scroll lock) opens the “System” Window.

Windows 10: In the new version of Windows, Explorer has a section called Quick Access. This includes your frequent folders and recent files. Explorer defaults to opening this page when you open a new window. If you’d rather open the usual This PC, with links to your drives and library folders, follow these steps:

• Open a new Explorer window.
• Click View in the ribbon.
• Click Options.
• Under General, next to “Open File Explorer to:” choose “This PC.”
• Click OK
