Windows 10: Windows 10 black screen on startup problem

Sorry about this. If you have a reputable repair service nearby, you could have them verify the diagnosis. They also may have a used laptop that one of their customers traded in for a newer model. They would have refurbished the old one, and might have it for sale cheap. Never hurts to ask.

 

I've been looking for a reason to upgrade anyhow. This Toshiba has served me well for several years. My preference is to extract as much value as I can from my tech, and I certainly will ask a place I know and trust, but if it's the end of the road, I am happy to buy something which will serve me for another few years to come *Smile

Ok - finally had a chance to have this looked at by a techie. Indeed your suppositions were correct and they have confirmed it's a graphics chip issue. I've been given options to replace the chip or the motherboard. Both are uneconomical given the age of the laptop.

Now time for a replacement. Can anyone recommend a good web site to help me select - or at least narrow down - my options from the hundreds of options out there? One that assesses UK options would be ideal *Smile
