  1. Windows 10 bootable USB issue

One thing you can do is boot from Windows 10 install media, select custom install, then delete all the partitions so the whole drive is unallocated. The drive will be unpartitoned and unformatted. Then power down without going any further. Then boot from your Linux install media and let it partition and format the drive how it wants.

    Hello

I recently looked into hard-disk (or whatever it’s called) installing Kali Linux on my 2nd spare PC to mess around with, now the problem is, I cannot run the setup menu from the USB using Secure boot, since it blocks it, and using Legacy, it just tells me there’s nothing to read, it just hangs on a ‘PXE-2.1’ screen indefinitely, I’ve messed around with the boot order, but nothing changes, besides some of the options which removes all the text, and just displays the little line like you’re about to type something there.

On the ‘PXE-2.1’ screen, if I just boot into it without the USB already in my laptop, then it will say there’s no bootable disk, and ask me to plug one in, however, even after plugging it in, it still doesn’t read, and I know that my USB works perfectly, as when I use secure boot to boot to Windows, then it shows up and works just fine, as well as on my other PC, it works just fine.
When I began with this yesterday, I completely forgot that I had to mount the ISO do the USB, so I did that, and that’s where I’m stuck, as all the problems I listed are after mounting it.

EDIT: The USB is formatted as FAT32 if it’s important, also my PC is UEFI (pretty sure) might be BIOS & UEFI since I can press a key on boot and get into the BIOS/UEFI menu from there.

    :)

  3. Windows won't boot, reset or fix.

    Hi,

    Thank you for replying.

Have you created a Bootable USB drive of Windows 10. If you haven't created then, I suggest you to create a USB drive of Windows 10 and check if it works.

If the issue persist even after creating a Bootable USB drive of Windows 10, then re-create a Windows 10 Bootable USB drive and try to perform Startup repair.

If you still face the same issue after re-creating Windows 10 Bootable USB, then refer to the below article and check if it helps.
    https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/2823223

Note: Steps for Windows 8 applies for Windows 10.

I hope this helps. Please post back with the status of the issue and we will be glad to assist you further.

It's not a windows 10 sir, my issue is a windows 10 PE (Preinstallation Environment) in a USB bootable.

I’m not sure I follow completely? What exactly do you mean?

EDIT: I meant to quote the answer of, alphanumeric but I forgot

  7. What I mean is, did you use the Media Creation tool, diskpart, or Rufus etc to create your bootable install media. The thread title talks about Windows 10, but you mention Linux in your post? which is it your trying to install?

    Windows 10 bootable USB issue

Ohh I understand now haha, well I’m trying to overwrite Windows 10 with Kali Linux instead, I downloaded the ISO file and mounted it to my USB with Daemon Tools Ultra, but I used diskpart beforehand, to make it ready

  9. Ok, now we're on the same page. Secure boot has to be off for sure. The UEFI part I'm not sure about to be honest? I run Linux on my Raspberry Pi's and one desktop PC. None of them are UEFI though. I can't remember if it was Etcher or Win32diskimager I used for my desktop install of Raspbian. You may want to change the thread title as it leads one to believe your issue is with installing Windows 10.

Alright will do, thanks for your help though!
Also, when I’m running Windows 10 at the moment, and want to install Linux over it, do you know if I have to use the ‘Windows bootable USB’ or the ‘Linux bootable USB’?
Because using the Windows option, would lead me to believe that it creates the USB to be read by windows, while not recognizing the Linux one, but the same thing the other way around, since I’m creating a USB with Linux on it, it would also lead me to believe that I should use the Linux option?
And also, the partition part, should it be GPT or MBR? Or does it even matter?

Sorry for all the questions haha, just wanna get this over with, as I’ve been stuck on this step for far too long now.

  11. To install Linux you want bootable Linux install media with the Distro you want to install. The only Linux PC install I've ever done was the x86 desktop version of Raspbian. That PC had Windows installed on it. I didn't have to really do anything, it wiped out Windows during the install all on its own. That was a non UEFI PC so I assume it was MBR.

Alright, I’ll try MBR and see what happens, but thanks once again!

For some reason it doesn’t let me edit the original post, so I can’t change the title :/
