Windows 10: Windows 10 broken

My brother somehow messed up the PC he built and I got stuck fixing it. In short: nothing works.


-The desktop is empty except for the default windows 10 wallpaper. No icons.

-The nav bar at the bottom of the screen only shows the windows icon, search icon, cortana icon, date/time, and the message icon. The entire bar is frozen up, clicking anywhere on it including the icons makes it turn a darker shade of grey and a few more clicks makes the screen go black for a second, then everything goes back to frozen. For some reason the date/time updates when this happens.

-Can't open task manager with control all delete, can still lock screen, change users, and sign out. None of the ease of access setting can be used.

-Right clicking the desktop and checking/unchecking show desktop icons does nothing. Can't open Personalize or Display settings. Can't open NVIDIA Control Panel. I can, however, shift right click and open powershell on the desktop.


I have no clue what he did to mess up this badly. I'm trying not to wipe and go with a clean install of windows so he doesn't complain about having to reinstall programs, but if I have to i will. Anything helps, thanks.

Windows 10 Tweaks

Pressing “Windows+Pause Break” (it’s up there next to scroll lock) opens the “System” Window.

Windows 10: In the new version of Windows, Explorer has a section called Quick Access. This includes your frequent folders and recent files. Explorer defaults to opening this page when you open a new window. If you’d rather open the usual This PC, with links to your drives and library folders, follow these steps:

• Open a new Explorer window.
• Click View in the ribbon.
• Click Options.
• Under General, next to “Open File Explorer to:” choose “This PC.”
• Click OK
