  1. Windows 10 browsers not working properly

I upgraded a month or so ago and all was fine but the last few weeks most web sites fail. I know my network is ok as other computers are ok and from the problem host oing and ssh work just fine (ip address and hostname). Google seems to work ok, most of the time, but most sites from google time out. The same if I type the site in by hand. I have tried Chrome and Edge, I was unable to download firefox, the web site timed out. I have AVG antivirus suite installed, I have tried to disable all its componets to no avail.

i have a local web server XAMP running and I cannot reach it locally, but from another host on my net it works ok.

i am using WiFi, but so are all my hosts.

I tried wireshark but it was inconclusive, I never did see any traffic. Comming or going, but I know comming works as the server was working, so I must have been on wrong interface (I had clicked on wifi). Netstat was also inconclusive, I could see the connection to google and the web server but not the timed out connections. I'm at a loss as to what to try next, any suggestions?

    Tom

PS my VMs in Virtualbox have the same issue so its a pretty low level problem.

PPS forgot to mention I tried connecting with netcat but it timed out just like the browsers.

    :)

  3. Browsers not working properly

    Hi,

Thank you for posting your query in Microsoft Community.

Sorry for the inconvenience caused. I will assist you with this.

I suggest you to try the following methods and see if it helps to resolve the issue.

    Method 1:

Run the Internet Explorer 11 in compatibility mode and check.

    Refer to the article :

    http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/internet-explorer/use-compatibility-view#ie=ie-11

    Method 2:

Try using Internet Explorer (No add-ons) to make sure that page isn’t rendering incorrectly because of an incompatible add-on. You can do this by:

    • Open the desktop, and then tap or click the Internet Explorer icon on the taskbar.

    • Tap or click the Tools button , and then tap or click Manage add-ons.

    • Under Show, tap or click All add-ons, and then select the add-on you want to turn off.

    • Tap or click Disable, and then tap or click Close.

    Method 3:

Try disabling the "Do not save encrypted pages to disk" option. This can be done by:

    • Open Internet Explorer
    • Click Tools
    • Click Internet Options
    • Click the Advanced tab
    • Scroll down to the Security heading and uncheck the
Do not save encrypted pages to disk box
    • Click OK
    • Close Internet Explorer (all windows)
    • Open Internet Explorer

Please reply back with the results.

    Thanks!

Hi, you mentioned you can't disable AVG functions, so maybe that is a pointer. Have you tried uninstalling it? If the uninstaller fails, you can use a tool from here:
AVG | Download tools and utilities

Once done, would also recommend some basic checks:
    chkdsk C: /F
    &
    sfc /scannow

    before further technical investigation.

It could also be interesting to compare using your laptop with an ethernet connection.

  5. Actualy i said I was able to disable AVG, it just made no difference. I thought about removing it but was unsure I had the correct code to reactivate it when I reinstall it. But it's still a good idea. Not sure how chkdsk and sfc would cause this, but no harm to try.

I dont easily have access to an ethernet connection, but if I can get it done Wireshark should work better.

  6. Did sfc and chkdsk, no joy. I then did a full uninstall of AVG (had to use tool you mentioned), again no joy. Next step is put on ethernet.

  7. I have not got it on ethernet yet but came up with a question, I tried to access the local web server both as localhost and my ipaddress, 192.168.1.5 (no dns name on laptop local server is only used for development) and any browser times out, For that type of connection does it even use the interface drivers? I know on Linux it does not, the loopback is at the kernel level but how does windows work?

I know the problem is on the outgoing side as I can reach the web site from a remote device and it selective as I seem to be able to reach and use goggle just fine, I think Bing as well, but little else, Can't reach Yahoo either.

Almost tempted to revert to Windows 7, but this is not a mission critcal laptop so frustration is not a reason to give up.

Did not mention it above but I cleared my history and web cache/cookies, etc. as well.
