Windows 10: Windows 10 camera disappeared from Device Manager

My windows 10 camera has disappeared from the OS software. (This is a camera within the software - not an externally-connected physical camera.) I've covered the beaten path of advice -- go to Device Manager etc., etc. -- contact the camera manufacturer (strange that Microsoft's website doesn't have any references to their built-in camera.) Many others said reloading the drivers would reopen the camera, but no camera, no drivers.

The camera showed up as 'phd camera'.

OS is Windows 10 Enterprise.

Motherboard is ASUS Zenith Extreme.

I need this to use with OBS Studio software.

I am positive that many users out there have this exact problem and have gone down the same circular path for a solution. Your help is greatly appreciated in advance!

Windows 10 update issue - camera

What is the make and model of the camera?

I would suggest you to make sure the camera is installed properly and listed under Device Manager.

Follow these steps:

• Press “Windows key + X” from keyboard.
• Select “Device Manager” option from the list.
• Check if the Camera is listed in the devices list.

If it is not listed then the Camera driver is not installed. I would suggest you to run “Hardware and Devices” troubleshooter to diagnose and fix the issue.

If the camera is listed in the device manager, then perform the following troubleshooting methods:

Method 1:

You may try running the Hardware and Device troubleshooter and check if it helps.

a. Press Windows Key +R, type Control Panel.

b. Type troubleshooting in the search bar, click on troubleshooting.

c. Click on Hardware and Sound, click on Hardware and Devices.

d. Follow the steps from the wizard to run the troubleshooter.

Method 2:

If that doesn’t work, then I would suggest you to perform troubleshooting steps from the link “What
to do if you have problems with an app” to diagnose and fix if the issue is with Camera app.

Method 3:

If this doesn’t fix the issue, I would suggest you to uninstall the camera from Device Manager then reinstall it and then check if this fixes the issue.

Follow these steps:

• Press “Windows key + X” from the keyboard.
• Select “Device Manager” option.
• Search for Camera, then right click and select “Uninstall”.
• Then restart the computer.
• Download the latest driver from the Manufacturer’s website and install it.

Integrated Camera not working, no imaging devices in device manager

This issue may arise if the driver of the camera is outdated. We suggest that you follow these troubleshooting steps:

Method 1: Install updates from the manufacturer.

• Open the Device Manager on your PC.
  • In Windows 10, enter Device Manager in the search box next to Start, and then select Device Manager in
    the results.
  • In Windows 8.1, swipe in from the right edge of the screen and then tap Search. (If you're using a mouse, point to the lower-right corner of the screen, move
    the mouse pointer up, and then click Search.) Then enter Device Manager in the search box, select Settings, and select Device Manager in
    the results.
• Expand Imaging devices.
• Right-click the camera that's having problems, and select Update Driver Software.
• Select Search automatically for updated driver software, and then follow the on-screen instructions. This might include restarting your PC.

Method 2: Install your PC's default drivers.

• Open the Device Manager on your PC.
  • In Windows 10, enter Device Manager in the search box next to Start, and then select Device Manager in
    the results.
  • In Windows 8.1, swipe in from the right edge of the screen, and then tap Search. (If you're using a mouse, point to the lower-right corner of the screen, move
    the mouse pointer up, and then click Search.) Then enter Device Manager in the search box, select Settings, and select Device Manager in

• Select Let me pick from a list of device drivers on my computer.
• Select USB Video Device, select Next, and then follow the on-screen instructions. This might include restarting your PC.
