Windows 10 computer takes hours and sometimes days to boot

Have you started running any software on your hard drive to see what kind of shape it`s in ?

Have you done any of the procedures suggested in reply #2 yet ?

Have you run a system file check ?

If you`re not gonna download software or start doing the suggestions given earlier, you are not gonna get anywhere.

You either have a bad drive, a bad install or you possibly downloaded something real nasty, or it could be a simple hardware problem.

If you are seriously worried about doing anything yourself, take it to a professional, all we can do here is offer you suggestions.

  2. Yes, I understand. I am very grateful for all the help and suggestions you have given me. This week, I will need my computer for some important things, and I don't want to risk it going off for another 2 days. I will try some of the suggestions this weekend, like the clean boot and booting in safe mode. Those sound like the best options to try. Thank you again for all the help.

You may have a device that is hanging up your system, causing the long boot up time. Suggest going to a bare bones configuration by doing the following:

    1. Draw a picture of your back panel showing all of the ports. Indicate what is plugged into which port so you can return to normal later. Do this for the ports on the front and top too.

    2. Power off your PC, disconnect the a/c power cable from the back, then press the power on button for 5 seconds to discharge capacitors which removes residual power to the motherboard.

    3. Remove every cable from your PC except ones for the keyboard, mouse and monitor.

    4. Open the cover for your PC. Then touch the bare chassis with both hands to discharge any static electricity from your body. Then disconnect the SATA and power cables from your optical drive.

    5. If you have more than one hard drive in your PC, disconnect them too. You should only have your system hard drive (or SSD) connected at this time.

    6. You should be in a bare bones configuration now.

    7. Power on your PC and see if it boots up normally.

    8. If it still does not boot up normally, power off as in step-2 again. And discharge your self as in step-4.

    9. I assume you have two RAM cards of 4GB each for 8GB. If so, determine which slot is slot zero and remove the other RAM card. Slot zero is usually the once closer to the CPU. Be sure you draw a picture (or take a picture with your camera) so you know which slots the cards are in if your motherboard has 4 RAM slots. BE SURE YOU DISCHARGE ANY STATIC ELECTRICITY BY DOING STEP-4 before handling RAM cards. Try to handle only by the edges and not touch the circuits as much as possible.

    10. See if it boots up normally. If not, remove the one RAM card (you only have one RAM card installed) and replace it with the other RAM card. You should still have only one RAM card installed.

    11. See if it boots up normally.

Note that a defective Optical drive or defective additional hard drives are very likely suspects as cause for long boot times, due to firmware or software waiting for the device to get ready. There should be a time out to not last days but strange things can happen.

    My $.02,

Windows takes up to an hour to boot: I have reinstalled Windows on this machine, which solved the problem for a couple weeks. The computer itself works with no issue after it's up and running.
