Windows 10 Creators Update killed our Canon IP6220D printer

We printed a document yesterday morning, the update came through in the afternoon, and today Windows no longer recognizes the printer. (Win 10 Home Edition, 64-bit)
I recognize that this is an old printer, but it's what we have, and I don't see why we should have to stop using it because of a Windows update. (Note that it also killed the printer on two other computers in our home, but I didn't make the connection until yesterday because the other two are rarely used for printing.)
Canon does not offer a Windows 10 (or 8) driver. I tried installing the Windows 7 driver without any positive results.

    What next? Thanks!

    :)

  3. EPSON printer & Windows 10 problems printing

I upgraded to Windows 10 some time ago as did my daughter on her laptop.

This type of behavior has started occurring recently on both of our laptops.

I have an Epson Workforce but she has a Canon printer.

She has had to resort to printing via USB

After Microsoft killed our touchpads with an earlier Windows 10 update (She has a Toshiba and I have a Dell) I am strongly thinking of switching to a Mac

Hi cwilly8. Welcome to the TenForums @cwilly8

When you installed driver for windows 7 did you try installing in Compatibility mode? (Right click on exe, click properties, select compatibility tab.)

While this solution is not a solution to getting your IP622D printer working have you considered making one of your other printers a Network printer which would be used by all devices? It would be attached to router either wirelessly, through a Lan cable or possibly even a USB connection, depending on router.

Not sure what you other devices are and you likely have them situated where the user needs the printer. Thought I would ask.

Thanks, Ken. We also have an Epson Artisan 730 printer that had quit printing black (ink path from cartridge to print head dried out?). At my brother's suggestion, I tried to squirt some isopropyl alcohol through the ink tube, which has enabled the black to print again. But when I try to print anything that has text, the text doesn't print. If in a table, with borders, all the borders print, but the text does not. This is also new behavior since the "update." I'll go try from a different PC and see what happens.

It did a screen print from an email just fine. So maybe everything is fine. Still can't use the Canon printer, but the Epson is more versatile anyway (wireless, scanner, all-in-one).

I think it's always worth sending some Feedback to Microsoft through the Feedback Hub in situations like this.
    Option 4 in this tutorial.

If you have a Microsoft Account then log into the Feedback Hub before raising feedback so you can track your feedback more easily.

You can also use the option to Start Capture and recreate the problem, and while it's capturing you might also open Device Manager to show what it says about that printer. (What does it say, by the way?) This will send more info to Microsoft on the problem, assuming you're happy to do this.

Microsoft say that they go through Feedback Hub reports pretty carefully so while it almost certainly won't be immediate, it may get fixed in some future version if it's something they can fix easily.

Edit: I forgot to say, do definitely try this suggestion from Ken if you haven't already. I've got some really old (Vista and XP!) drivers working in Windows 10 using this method.

Windows 10 Creators Update killed our Canon IP6220D printer

    Thank you, gentlemen!

After reinstalling the printer driver in Windows 7 compatibility mode, I tried my old go-to solution -- restart the computer. At least from the laptop I can now print to the Canon printer. In the Devices and Properties window, it shows as "Inkjet Printer," but in the Print Dialog box it correctly shows as Canon IP6220D.

Your suggestions were very useful and very much appreciated.

  9. Glad you have it working. I would still consider having one networked printer. One set of costs and greener.
