Better to come out and say it now then to make people wonder what's up on the day in question. IMHO. If you've reserved your upgrade via the Get Windows 10 app, your PC may download what's needed a day or two before. Then just update when it gets the go signal from Redmond. That would spread the bandwidth out even more by preloading a bunch of PC's before hand. And take some of the strain off of the download servers on the big day. They are going to have to stager it for the rest but hopefully they only have to wait a day or two.

If MS plans to distribute it piece by piece, they should start sending finished parts soon. Could not find anything in IO logs.

  3. May be a bit early for that yet. I wouldn't expect it to happen until about a week before the official release date. That would be my guess anyway. It would be a managed download that would keep track of progress and resume when your PC is turned on. I doubt you'll see any please do not shut down your PC messages. You likely won't even know its happening unless your looking for it.

To me, it sounds like they are going to do the piece by piece starting on July 29 instead of earlier, since they are rolling out in stages.

  6. This is where I now get confused

at first I thought this would be done about a week or so before the 29th, but now it sounds like it is going to start doing it after the 29th

  7. I think they'll start before the 29th. Just my 2 cents though. Nobody will be updated until the 29th, but the files needed will be downloaded before then. I think it will be the people that didn't reserve their update that will be staggered download. I could be wrong, who knows.

It was my understanding too that most people (not Insiders) would have it download in the run-up to 29th. I wonder if they are running behind where they wanted to be, and shifting the timescales slightly.

I suspect it's more to do with the volume of upgrades and server load than running behind with the OS development.

    What happens when I reserve?

When you reserve, you can confirm your device is compatible with Windows 10. Between reservation and when your upgrade is ready, the files you need for the upgrade will be downloaded to your PC to make the final installation go more quickly. Then, when your upgrade is ready after July 29, 2015, you get a notification that lets you get started with your upgrade.

    How long does it take?

Plan for about an hour for the installation. Newer devices may only take 20 minutes, and older devices may take more than an hour.
You’ll need to download the installation files before you begin. If you reserve, we’ll take care of downloading those files for you and let you know when you are ready to get started.

  12. That just means you can't update until the 29th or latter. Even if all the required files are already downloaded and ready. That's how I read it anyway. It is open to interpretation though.

They are also doing it step wise to make sure all reserved devices can actually have a good "OOBE". Just because, for example, someone has an i7, SSD, and a GeForce GTX 980 Ti, doesn't necessarily mean Win 10 can install well.

  14. Lots and lots of variables to contend with. Upgrade from Windows 7 or 8.1? MSE or Defender or other? Drivers, installed software, peripherals connected? Possibly Pirated or infected with malware? The list goes on. Recovery options in case things go south? This is why they have been pushing us to upgrade instead of doing clean installs. This is why ISO's are few and far between.

Yup to those variables, that's why even though I had absolutely no problems with the Insider upgrades with everything being pretty much left(except for RAPID Mode) I've still cleaned house. For example already deactivated WMC & Gadgets in Win7 and will uninstall MSE a day before. On both machines got rid of all traces of UXStyles and set my Disk properties to Windows default and ran SFC and ran winsat to let windows set to defaults. I want so little carry over cruft as possible.
