  1. Windows 10 Dell Laptop Upgrade Issue

So I I've upgraded to Win10 on my main desktop, laptop, and my wife's laptop without issue. My wife's aunt was having some problems with her laptop so I took it, cleaned it up a bit and started the upgrade from Windows 7 to Windows 10. I started the upgrade and once it got to to the automated portion I let it go for a while. When I came back, the laptop was on but on a black screen with no cursor. I powered it off and the Dell boot screen came up, followed by the Windows 10 icon and the spinning circle. It then gets past that and returns to the black screen. I don't have any external monitors connected to the laptop. Any ideas?

    :)

Do you have a monitor you can connect? Worth tyrying.

Also try a blind login by pressing Enter then type the password and press Enter again.

  5. Yeah from what I've read I am definitely going to try an external monitor. The PC wasn't previously password protected but I'll try just hitting enter. Headed home to try now.

  6. So that did the trick. I can see the desktop on the external monitor. However, I now can't seem to get it to recognize the laptop display.

  7. WinKey + P unfortunately does not work either. Have tried uninstalling the display drivers with no success either.

Is ther a Fn+f# key combo that swaps onboard and external display? If so, try that. Often it's Fn+F4 (or F5).

  10. Yeah that's the screen it shows. No change though. F1 is the key that switches displays but it didn't switch to laptop display either..

On my Dell Inspiron 15R Notebooks it is the Fn key + the F1 key. The markings on some Notebooks I've had to deal with have had the markings reversed so it may be only the Fx key that operates what the symbol stands for.

It was Fn + F1. So when I tried to reinstall it gave me the error message that my laptop could not use Windows 10 lol. And something about updating the BIOS. So, updated the BIOS. So far it's letting me install but will see if it actually works on the onboard display.

I've been having the exact same problem with my Dell laptop and after a week of trouble shooting i have finally got the screen working.
If you go to the Dell support webpage download and install the BIOS update version A11 (must be this version) and restart. Hope ur as sucessful as I was.
