windows 10 detects wrong drive manufacturer & type????

This one is a new one on me but am sure there is going to be someone out there that has come across this... I have several HDD's in my systems, after receiving recent updates recently I noticed my boot drive on one of them starting to clunk & squeal a bit, I thought as the drive was quite old, and was only meant as a temporary measure anyway it was time to bin it, so I attempted to back up the drive - as you might expect with a failing drive it wasnt successful, after powering down and checking to see what was being reported in the bios I noticed the drives weren't displaying their correct model designations, so powering down and removing all the drives bar the suspect one and powering back up and re entering the bios, the drive then reported correctly and was able to successfully boot into windows - now for the strange bit, after checking the drives properties in the device manager I noticed it was being reported as a Seagate ST3000DM001 drive, the problem is this is an old western digital WD500AAKS caviar drive, I cant mistaken this one as its sat on the top of the case with the cables hanging out of it, I used this old drive on purpose as I didnt want to drop this OS on a SSD until I was sure it was stable. the OS was a fresh install to this drive, and as you might expect, during the initial installation and testing phase it was the only drive on the system, the other drives werent added until later, and have been trouble free until this last update, has anyone else encountered a similar issue to this?

    :)

  2. Error: "The Request could not be performed because of an I/O device error" while trying to access the WD hard drive on Windows 10

    Hello Larsen,

We appreciate your interest in Windows 10.

As you are facing issues with accessing the external hard drive on Windows 10, we will help you with this issue.

I would like to inform that for Windows to support the devices, it has to be detected and configured by the BIOS.

In the above scenario as the hard drive is not detected from the BIOS and detected hard drive is not configured on the BIOS, I recommend you to hardware manufacturer (Western Digital Support) for better assistance.

Hope it helps. Feel free to contact us for further assistance on Windows Operating System. We will be happy to help you.

    Thank you.

External SATA3 SSD to USB (512GB Crucial MX100 SSD) showing up as a Hard drive in Windows 10 Defragment and optimize drives?

It must be an issue with Windows 10 Control Panels' Defragment and Optimize drives inability to detect any SSD

placed into any external SATA 3 to USB 3.0 Storage device. For now, Windows 10 detection of an SSD seems limited

    to internal SSDs' only.

I'm not concerned with lack of trim support since SSD trim is limited to Operating System drives

only & I use this external USB SSD for backups & additional storage. Don't worry about Windows 10 defragmenting & ruining your external USB SSD though because despite it being incorrectly detected as an HDD

the defragment drive feature doesn't seem to work on SSDs' that are designed to use their own internal garbage collection anyhow.

I've tried System Restore several times to correct this issue to no avail. The external USB SSD works and runs perfectly

despite Windows 10 detecting it as an HDD so I'm no longer concerned about this issue. Good luck!

windows 10 detects wrong drive manufacturer & type????

Yes, I have seen this before, in my case it was a WD Blue HDD. Various odd model numbers were reported by the BIOS. A surface scan would be OK with no bad sectors. However it failed shortly after. My assumption was the electronics/driver board went caput. It had to be mechanically destroyed as nothing could be written to it.

Whatever, I always buy a new drive and install the OS and Programs. Load data/documents from backups.
