Windows 10: Windows 10 disabled my DVD RW Drive

I did this and it worked for my mom's laptop (from Solved Windows 10 - my dvd/cd drive is not recognised, at all - Windows 10 Forums)

At first, it went away after restarting, but once I did it again, it stuck.

The following is what information I've found on my computer:

∙ Both drives (Plextor DVDR PX-891SAW SCSI) and (Plextor DVDR PX-L890SA) are listed in Device Manager and both list Status as: This device is working properly.
∙ Neither drive is listed in Disk Management.
∙ Belarc listings: PLEXTOR DVDR PX-891SAW SCSI CdRom Device [Optical drive] AND
PLEXTOR DVDR PX-L890SA [Optical drive]

I HAVE THE SOLUTION!! ( or at loeast it worked for me).
The dreaded 10 upgrade uploaded on my new computer and immediately rendered my built in DVD RW player and my brand new wireless printer useless. That happened in Dec, 2015. I moved a week later and put off doing anything about it BECAUSE I LOATHE MESSING WITH COMPUTERS TO GET THEM TO WORK!! Its not my thing but I NEEDED my DVD Burner for business. I NEEDED my printer fo business. For the last 12 weeks I have wasted a ton of time reading and trying to work with WIndows Support. Forums, the Mafia you name it. Chat Support never sent the DVD upgrade as promised and I was down to ONE STRAND OF HAIR LEFT IN MY HEAD.
Yesterday, I resolved to try and delete Windows 10 and go back to 8.1. But instead I made my DVD RW work!!!!! Its now listed in my Programs and everything!! Even the builts in's Manufacture version is LISTED!! Before there was zip. Nada. All the Regestry junk I tried the Store Apps....NADA worked. The upgrades and updates did not "automatically" occur as the Computer nerds claimed.

I did this:
Start> SETTINGS> RECOVERY> a window pops up. I chose "RESET MY PC". ( I chose the day before to go back to)> another window pops up. I chose "CHOOSE AN OPTION" ( that allows me to keep all my Personal files SINCE I CANT MAKE A DVD TO SAVE AS A BACKUP.... > I followed the prompts and the RESET started to download.
After a bit, it said all was groovy and to hit ACCEPT then RESTART. I did so. Once it came back online a window said my computer had been set for the day before as I had chosen.
Holding my breathe I popped in a DVD!! HALLELUJAH! It opened up! The DVD Player is working!! I had already rigged my Printer to do the minimum but I'm too excited to check if it too has improved. The MAIN thing is the DVD is aliveeeeee.
Apparently, when you reset your PC it fixes any buggers they messed up originally including the DVD update and I can at this very second feel my hair regrowing as I type. I wish you LUCK!

 

I finally solved my problem.
I don't know if this will help others, but I'm posting it, just in case.
Here is a rundown of what led to a solution:

Prior to this I had searched the internet many times trying to find out why my Plextor CD ROM drives could no long be accessed. I had tried making the changes in the registry and all the other “fixes” I could find without success.
Today, I Went to Devices and Printers to change my default printer.
I had always just used Ds&Ps to manage my printers and/or their properties and had never selected the CD ROM drives that are also listed there.
This time, since I wasn’t in a hurry, I decided to see if the drives showed anything different than
what I had always found in Device Manager.
So I selected one of my CD drives, clicked on Hardware and then Properties. When I clicked on Driver the only selection offered was “Driver Details” so I thought I had reached another dead end.
I then went back to the General tab and decided to click on Change Settings in the bottom left corner.
This opened another Properties window which said This “device is working properly,” which is what it always said when the drives weren’t working. I then selected the Driver tab and the Driver Provider was listed as Corel . . . Corel ???
I clicked on “Update Driver” and after a considerable wait I received the usual message that I already had the best driver installed.
Not being satisfied, I clicked on “Roll Back Driver”, what did I have to lose?
The Driver Provider was quickly replaced with Microsoft.
Then I went to “This PC” (File Explorer) and BOTH CD drives were now listed.
I insert CDs into each drive and opened them and they both worked.
I don’t know how or when the CD drivers were changed from Microsoft to Corel, but I can only assume it happened during one of the many Windows 10 updates.
Prior to this, neither drive was even listed in This PC.
I hope this helps the many people that I’ve encountered during my “searches” for a solution.
