Windows 10: Windows 10 doesn't keep a recent file-list for Notepad

I hear you Mooly and agree with the 'usability' of jump lists and especially the pinned items. The only (slight) drawback is that you have to do maintenance since they otherwise grow to be miles long.

It has to be a daily, somewhat tedious, routine of removing the files that are only temporarily useful but that you have no immediate plan to return to. Should you want to, the notes are always available via File/Open... A tedious and time consuming habit yes, but it can save you lots of frustration - even money and reputation - down the line.

Quite beside the value of neat, clean jump lists, Notepad is a very useful little app indeed. Case in point: before I start a telephone conversation with, let's say, my ISP's or cell phone providers' support, my health-care provider or whatever, I open a new Notepad document on which type a brief descriptive heading, the date and time.

During the call I then jot down the name of whoever it is I talk to and memory-notes. After the call I proofread and correct the text. This then is my log which is very handy should there be a dispute. Not conclusive evidence, true, but as James Comey observed during his recent dealings with you-know-who, better than nothing.

No need to get into the tiresome, unproductive he-said-she-said; you have a log which supports your case should the need arise. Also, it's difficult to remember verbatim what was agreed three weeks or two months after the fact.

Another thing I would not want to be without is the excellent search application Everything by Voidtools. If the file you wonder about is anywhere on your system (and I have three external drives in addition to the C:\ drive; all partitioned almost to the full extent of the alphabet Everything finds it. It's kind of difficult to keep track of thousands of files on umpteen partitions - Everything to the rescue:

My apologies - I was referring to list from File Open, not Jump Lists.

Agreed, I've never seen that feature on Notepad in the years I've run Windows. It must be kept in mind that Notepad is not a word processor, just a text editor and as such has very few features. It's main purpose seems to be for coding/programming and for basic HTML creation/editing where some of the 'hidden' features/document formatting of word processors would get in the way. Wordpad is a word processor, 'lite' version of Word but with some of it features.

 

There's no need to be rude on a simple mistake. Chill out.

Ten is the maximum default number of items that are in the list (apart from any pinned items) and tbh I find it self maintaining. If the file is something I'm currently working with then its present, when its not been called up for a while (and other new ones have) then it works down and ultimately drops off the bottom of the list.

What's not to like *Smile It works for me anyway.
