Windows 10 download display shows starting download - not downloading

    Hello All,

Please excuse my lack of Computing terminology when writing this - I am a complete novice in the use of a Computer having been entirely `self taught` on just the basics.

I clicked onto the `Get Windows 10` button on the Windows 10 upgrade onscreen display [the display that has the Time counting down to the expiry of the free Windows 10 upgrade offer] - a different onscreen display box appeared with the message `Starting download..... Once download is complete, you can start the upgrade, or schedule it for later`.

An Hour later there was no download amount that I would associate with the Windows 10 upgrade download.

My download amount in that period was just 14MB which I associate with my looking at Emails and a small update on my AVG Anti Virus Software.

I waited about another Hour before posting this as I had something else to attend to - now as I am about to submit this message the Windows 10 Download was supposed to start downloading almost 2 Hours ago - still no indication of a large download beginning.

I have a Download Meter on my Computer which I know to be really accurate but even if it was not I was expecting a `Massive` download when upgrading to Windows 10.

I am guessing that I will be advised to Close the Windows 10 download onscreen display box and try clicking onto `Get Windows 10` again but I wanted to check whether there might be a fairly long `Pre-download` process that is carried out prior to the actual download commencing and I did not want to mess up the `Start` process.

ALSO - Very important to Me - IF I get advice on starting the Download again should I stop using my Computer while the Download process is being carried out or is that just necessary when the actual Upgrade is being carried out ?

Sorry if that is a `silly question` but I really am concerned about not messing up this Windows 10 upgrade as I would probably not be capable of rectifying anything that goes wrong.

I would really appreciate any help.

    Regards,

    Chris

    :)

Windows 10 download display shows starting download - not downloading

    Hello again,

For possible future readers of this - rather than just leave this thread without writing that I have closed the Windows 10 Downloading onscreen display box - this is what happened:

I waited for a few Hours after posting this thread to see if I would receive any replies / advice and as the situation was still exactly the same as I was when I wrote my original message - regarding that the Windows 10 download had not started to download - I exited the Windows 10 Upgrade download onscreen display box [closed it].

I have not had time to be in front of my Computer again for Hours today so I will try to Upgrade to Windows 10 again within the next couple of days.

Any suggestions as to what might have caused this `NOT Downloading` problem - the Windows 10 `Starting download` onscreen display box was on screen for Hours - would be very welcome especially if I receive them before I try again.

If this was just an update for my Windows 7 Home Premium of course I would have closed the Download display box after just a few minutes of not seeing any download amount on my Broadband Usage Meter but I was concerned that there MIGHT be a very long drawn out `Pre-download` process for Upgrading to Windows 10 and that if I interrupted that I would mess up the whole process.

That thought dissipated after an hour or so but as I was posting on here I just left the display box on screen.

    Regards,

    Chris

Hi Chris and welcome to Tenforums.
Sorry for the delay in responding, but things get quite busy here at times, and it could take days before someone gets to answer a thread.

This is crunch time for W10 upgrades, so here's what I would recommend for you:

MS upgrade servers are probably getting hammered now. *Smile
If you have any questions, please ask.

    Hello simrick,

Thank You very much for replying to my thread.

I was not complaining that I had not yet received a reply to my message - I could not have even guessed how busy or otherwise this Forum is - I have posted on other Computer Forums where the replies came almost as quick as a `Live Chat` - and others where I either never received a reply or had to wait Days.

Thank You for the link to the instructions on what to do prior to Upgrading to Windows 10 - unfortunately for me the various processes are FAR too complicated for me to even contemplate trying - I would cause havoc before I even tried to Upgrade to Windows 10 !

I am entirely self taught on some very simple Computing processes - some years ago I just bought a Computer - the `Microsoft Vista for Dummies` book - and `played` until I was able to do the things that I wanted to do.

I use my Computer mainly for just Email and browsing the Internet but I do have software that I use for other things.

I have been having problems with Internet Explorer 11 so reluctantly I decided to upgrade to Windows 10 to get a better Browser / better Internet access.

I realise that is a strange reason to risk upgrading but I have tried `Fixing` IE 11 many times - and reverting to other / earlier versions and nothing has helped.

Thanks again for your interest and for trying to advise me on how to prepare prior to upgrading but what you proposed is definitely too complicated for Me to carry out.

I am sure that your suggestion / link will help other readers so something will have come of my thread.

    Regards,

    Chris

P.S. I did not receive a notification email about your reply - is there something that I should have done to enable that facility ?

    You're quite welcome.
I didn't think you were complaining at all, sorry if I gave that impression. *Smile

Nonsense! We can walk you through every step of the way. Being you are self-taught, (as am I), you will have no problem with any of it, I'm sure.

Some years ago, I bought my first computer. When I saw how much techs were charging to fix stuff, I decided then and there: if I was going to own a computer, I'd better know how to fix it.

Have you tried any other browsers? Firefox is a good one, and it's similar to Internet Explorer (IE), but far more customizable and safer.

Microsoft's IE is out of fashion (in W10) and Edge is the latest and greatest. It's completely different from IE (although IE still works in W10). Oh, and it's version 11. *Smile

I think you underestimate yourself. *Wink That link I gave you for prep work is an overview. Specifics can be handled in your thread here. We've got some very talented users here, all ready and willing to walk you through anything.

p.s. You should get notifications to the thread, as you're the thread starter, and it's automatic. You might check in your User CP and see if you have it setup for emails or not:
