Windows 10: Windows 10 DRIVER_IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL

My system specs were as following

Motherboard - Asus Z97 A USB 3.1

CPU - Intel i7 4771

Ram - 4 sticks of Kingston 8gb HyperX DDR3 ram (232Gb in total)

GPU - Zotac GTX 970 Amp Omega 4Gb version.

SSD 1 - 240Gb Kingston HyperX (OS)

SSD 2 - 240Gb Samsung Evo (games)

Hard disk 1 - 1.5 TB Seagate (storage)

Hard disk 2 - 250Gb Seagate (OS backup)


I formatted SSD 2, shut down the PC and removed it from the system. I booted the system to check and it seemed fine - no issues.


The day after i started to get BSODs at random with DRIVER_IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL and below that it says that storahci.sys failed.


Since then the system only boots up about 10% of the time before BSODing. I have disconnected the all other drives apart from a new SSD on which to install the OS.


I have tried 3 different versions and version 1809 seems to be the issue as version 1803 works fine - until it starts to update to 1809 and add new features.


I cant understand

1. Why this has happened due to removing the SSD2.
2. Why windows 10 would get bsods due to removing a drive that had nothing but games saved on it
3. What is in version 1809 that is causing this
4. How to stop the update to 1809 and "features" being added that cause this BSOD.

Windows 10 Tweaks

Pressing “Windows+Pause Break” (it’s up there next to scroll lock) opens the “System” Window.

Windows 10: In the new version of Windows, Explorer has a section called Quick Access. This includes your frequent folders and recent files. Explorer defaults to opening this page when you open a new window. If you’d rather open the usual This PC, with links to your drives and library folders, follow these steps:

• Open a new Explorer window.
• Click View in the ribbon.
• Click Options.
• Under General, next to “Open File Explorer to:” choose “This PC.”
• Click OK

DTS supported natively by Windows 8/8.1 and it should work on windows 10 too just DDL require to unlock your driver .
