Windows 10: Windows 10 error “Couldn’t complete the updates. Undoing changes” every time I start my PC.

Almost every single time I’ve tried to start my PC in the past 5 months or so, windows has tried to complete an update which hasn’t worked. It always loads the update like normal, before finally saying “couldn’t complete the updates, undoing changes” before starting up the PC like normally. This wasn’t too big of an issue at first, but now I have to go through this 20-30 minute process almost every time my PC starts, and sometimes just randomly attempting it after leaving my pc for ten minutes is very annoying. The update required is from February according to the windows update app, it is called “Update for Windows 10 Version 1803 for x64-based Systems (KB4346084)”. I’ve tried quite a few solutions but none of which have worked and I don’t want to have to fac reset my PC so any advice would be helpful, thanks.

I suggest you to run the Windows Update troubleshooter and check if it helps.

Windows 10 has a built-in troubleshooter to check and fix issues with Update. I would suggest you to run this troubleshooter to check if the issue is with your Windows update.

Refer these steps:

  Change the view by option on the
  top right to Large icons.
  
• 
  Click on troubleshooting and click on the
  view all option on the left panel.

  Run the Windows Update troubleshooter.

Windows can't complete the update and then it undoes all the changes

I am trying to update my windows to 1809, to use the ray tracing features on my RTX 2070. I am currently on version 1803. When I try to update using the windows 10 update assistant, it goes through all the steps but once it restarts to update I start to
have problems. It gets to 16% complete and then starts undoing changes. How can I fix this?

I've got the same issue and following on @Arthur's suggestion, I had a look at my user SIDs in the registry under HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\ProfileList and some of them belonged to users that no longer existed in the system (I had previously removed them).

I've removed the dummy entries (luckily there were only a couple) and the update worked.

PLEASE save yourself some trouble and backup the registry before trying that.
