Windows 10: Windows 10 Failed to Install

I have a Dell laptop that I upgraded to Windows 10 about 1 1/2 years ago from Windows 7. The most recent automatic update (installed on 29 January) failed to install properly with the result that as soon as I reach the log-in screen my laptop proceeds to shut down. After much agony trying to fix it, I decided to create a Windows 10 installation USB drive with the Windows Media Creation Tool and use that to repair Windows, or if necessary reinstall Windows. The repair process was unsuccessful. So, I tried to reinstall Windows. Because I upgraded to Windows 10 from Windows 7 while doing so was free, I do not have a product key. On the "Activate Windows" window, I was advised "If you're reinstalling Windows, select I don't have a product key. Your copy of Windows will be automatically activated later." So, I clicked on "I don't have a product key." The next screen asked me to select the operating system I wanted to install -- I selected "Windows 10 Home" which is what I had be operating. After clicking "next" I clicked a box indicating I accepted the license terms. On the next screen I was given a choice to choose "Upgrade: Install Windows and keep files, settings, and applications" or "Custom: Install Windows only (advanced)". I chose "Upgrade" -- and, I was notified --

"

The upgrade option isn't available if start your computer using Windows installation media. If a copy of Windows is already installed on this computer and you want to upgrade, remove the installation media and restart your computer. After Windows has started normally, insert the installation media and run Windows Setup."


Unfortunately, this presents me with a Catch-22. I can't upgrade with the USB drive, and I can't reboot my computer and reinstall Windows because my computer immediately shuts down. Went back a step and tried the "Custom Install" and it failed, Now I essentially have a bricked computer. Any advice? I would normally call customer service, but I am stationed overseas on a U.S. military installation and making calls from Japan to the U.S. is expensive on my calling plan, and it is difficult to call due to the time differential.

Windows Updates failed to instal

I just did step one and they have just all installed.... thank you so much.... it was quite frustrating having that update window pop up every 5 minutes and failing to instal every time

windows xp installation and dual core am

could someone please list the steps they follow to install windows with a dual core processor and windows xp service pack to. I'm reletively new to amd dual core and i feel i'm missing a step. All help will be appreciated. thanx
