  2. Yes, maybe it was disabled in RTM/10240? Anyone can confirm?

It still works on my build 10240.

Try setting it in group policy to see how it works for you.

Not, it does not. It probably relies on powershell or something I have disabled. *Think
Disabling Privacy settings pretty much disables many apps, so maybe it affects this.

Nope. It only affects what's in the tutorial.

Windows 10 Forced Updates on RTM

Thanks Brink, this makes Windows 10 Home Edition's Automatic Updates not so bad after all.

With that being said a registry tweak to disable Automatic Update downloads/install and the ability to hide updates likes previous Windows versions makes Windows Updates in Windows 10 almost act like the "Check for Updates but Let Me Choose Whether to Download/Install" in older variations of Windows.

    Great post and guides!

I just don't get MS way of thinking. Once they come up with something as good as Windows 7 they apparently feel the urge to screw it up in subsequent releases and then attempt to rectify things by applying some twisted workarounds instead of just keeping the baseline right.

  10. But how would supporting Windows 7 forever and ever, amen, help Microsoft as a company grow? Let's say that Microsoft is going downhill with Metro/8/10/Surface (pick a product). Would they have been any more successful by just updating Windows 7 in perpetuity? Certainly not.

I agree that older versions of Windows were preferable for users like you or me, but we're not interested in Microsoft's business health. We just want our Windows the way we like it. But Satya Nadella needs to create wealth for the shareholders of his company. That's the chief reason he is there. So to do that, he MUST enter the mobility space and win over users to Windows Phone, Surface, and Windows RT.

Now, recent Mac OS X builds have incorporated iOS tools into the desktop OS. This has allowed users of Macs have become accustomed to increased access to mobile apps on their home machine. So it would seem smart for Microsoft to build up their apps ecosystem and make it accessible to mobile users on their home OS. And that's why we have Metro styled apps on the desktop OS builds.

The Explorer style desktop is not a growth sector for Microsoft. They grew a large corporate market with the Explorer interface, alongside their Office products. But what more can you do to evolve these products? What new revolutionary thing needs to be added to the desktop that hasn't appeared yet?

Jody, you are absolutely right about the need for MS to grow and explore the mobile, touch-optimised market, but I think you missed my point. I am not talking about keeping Windows 7 forever. The thing is that "modern" should in no case mean dysfunctional. And this is the way Microsoft seems to go.

I guess the vast majority of personal market wouldn't mind as home users tend to prefer simplicity and the impression that they're being taken care of. But there are also prosumers and IT professionals that constitute quite significant portion of the pie. And they are more critical than enthusiastic, especially when forced to use tweaks and hacks to achieve what used to take just a few clicks in the GUI.

Windows 10 Forced Updates on RTM

Having posted this article about MS going over to USB media, I have bought it on CD. Reason for doing so was that the store I bought it from didn't have an ETA for the USB version and therefore couldn't guarantee a delivery for 29th.
