Windows 10 free upgrade for customers who use assistive technologies

My son thought the deadline was Sunday and called Sat saying he missed it by a day. He upgraded using the link from OP and it worked (July 30) However, based on Navy and Cerberus comments, sounds like you can upgrade either way and it works. Has anyone tried entering a WIn7 key in Win10 (the other way to activate prior to July 29)?

OK........just my opinion but I really do not think MS ever intended to stick to their "Last Day to Upgrade for Free" policy...........

Servers seem to still be accepting Win 7 and 8 keys............and MS also puts up the extended deadline for those who use "assistive technologies"..........on Microsoft's sites they state that using keyboard shortcuts is also listed as an assistive technology..........

So, by MS standards if you have ever hit F1 for help.......F2 for BIOS.....etc, then you need not have any bad conscience for using the Assistive Technology link.........

I am not saying it is either ethical or unethical, that is for each person to decide on their own.............Had the magic number of windows users upgraded by the cutoff date then MS would probably had stuck to their word and ended the free upgrade..........

Windows 10 free upgrade for customers who use assistive technologies

While this seems like a good deal for a qualifying person, has anyone seen whether this "assistive technologies" source works as good as the original upgrade or not? Thanks Jim

I found no difference between the assistive technologies or the upgrade via windows update...........

How did you upgrade it? With an ISO loaded in Hyper V?
What steps did you follow? Please outline.

I need to do a VM as well. Its Win 8. Do I need to make it 8.1 before?

    More details:

    Windows 8 - 14.99 License Product key
Never used before - Until last night before end of Free Win 10 DE.
Used on Win 8 VM in Hyper V - created from the Win 8 ISO that was downloaded while buying the 14.99 Product Key.
It wouldnt accept via Control Panel so used SLMGR to enter they key.

So? How can/ should I proceed?

I'd like for the Win 10 DE to be TIED to this Product Key and not the underlying HW/ OEM firmware/ HWID.
Hence I used the Product Key inside the VM
How can I ensure this DE is not attached to HWID but to the purchased Win 8 key?

Boot to Win 8, get genuine ticket, boot to 10, insert ticket and get DE. 10 minute process.

I had done this but it did not work.. I will try it again .. but please tell me WHICH Windowns to try it with?

Please point specific OS release to use in each of the following steps:

Source: Win 8 in VM - release? currently using the ISO from that download -
Should this be upped to 8.1 for better chance? Use a different Source OS?

Than add (In what order?) :
    + Accessibility Features?
    + GatherOSState.exe = Genuine Ticket

Destination: Win 10 in VM - Which release?
Or try to upgrade actual VM with ISO/DVD in Hyper V - Which release?

I've done some 20 or so machines in few nights using GatherOSState .. some failed and most got done.. so please tell me the steps without missing a step/ specifics.. Thanks.

Well, went ahead on your say so. From the web page activation, it worked just fine. Just started in is all. Took only an hour too, versus about 8 the other day but maybe there were heavy loads on $M the last deadline day.

In any case looked just fine but did get the upgrade plus update.

Had too much on the plate so I just rolled it back to my win7 and it worked clean as a whistle.

    Thanks much

    You are over complicating things.

Simple answer is upgrades from 7/8 to 10, or clean installs of 10 activated with a 7/8 key ONLY get digital licences tied to mobo not OLD key. Currently it seems there is an activation grace period and that will probably end soon (may even have done so).

The new activation troubleshooter enables retail licences to be legally transferred to a new device BUT you cannot transfer from a VM to a physical machine or vice versa.

Agreed. Very simply put it is the individual computer that gets upgraded to Windows 10 - not the Windows 7/8/8.1 product key.

Well, wasnt there a page where MS outlined that for: (Can you link me to that page? )
    1. OEM/ HW actived Pre Win 10 licenses > Win 10 DE = Tied to HW
    2. Retail/ Product key Pre Win 10 licenses > Transferrable Win 10 DE

Or does that key also do a HWID based DE and for Transfer there is this new mechanism?

What if I've already used a Type 1 machine to get an OEM based DE.
Now how do I use a Type 2 Retail key to get another DE on same machine? Or do I have to use another machine/ VM? Thoughts/ Ideas?

Also, how does a person responsible for Managing several machines & their Win 10 DEs (Home/ Family or SOHO/ SMB) link these DEs to his MS account?
Does MS allow 1 to 1 or 1 to Many to manage DEs? How would one do this?

Dont MS Email IDs expire if not used for X no of days?

You really are making it complicated. A digital licence is tied to the mobo - end of story.

With new version, you have ability to transfer a digital licence to a new mobo.

This is only permitted if the original licence was retail, and you have installed latest version of windows. Linking it to the MSA is automatic usually.

You can only have one digital licence per version e.g. one for home, one for pro. You cannot have two for home eg one for an oem original key and one for original retail key.

If you install windows home a second time it activates automatically. Whether original digital licence is replaced if you use "change product key" using an original 7/8 key, or not, I do not know. In any case, the free upgrade period is ended, so that is no longer applicable (although it may still work until MS finally stop it).

Windows 10 free upgrade for customers who use assistive technologies

Well, since the "assistive window" is still open I'd like to leverage that, since on the last 2 days I was not able to get my VM's to get the Win 10 DE.

(PS: MCT - Media Creation Tool)

Am I? I just asked you how exactly you got the DE on the VM? That's all. Since you mentioned - please do share exact steps.

I created 2 VMs (H/W Similar but maybe Hyper V creates Diff HWID??)
    - One Win 8 with Product key, One Win 10 from MCT Aug 2015

Did you use the 2 stage: GatherStateOS.exe GenuineTicket method between 2 VMs?
    Or
Update the same Win 8 VM to Win 10 (ISO attached to Hyper V VM)??
    Or
Fresh Install Win 10 (newer MCT or Non MCT release e.g. MSDN ISO) on same VM?

Ok. Got it. So, I have no choice but to do this on another machine (which I dont have) or use a VM, like Cerebrus did.

I tried some steps on VM but it did not work so Im asking Cerebrus for the exact steps procedure he follow for VM DE?
