Windows 10: Windows 10 freeze

The freezing of Windows 10 is a well-known problem: I could find many blogs and (pseudo-)solutions, and the hint that Microsoft is hard working on it. It hit me early summer 2018, too: no Windows update anymore without crash and at least 3 restarts !!! Thus I tried out some hints from other users.


On my ACER Aspire S7 with a RAID (2 SSDs), setting the paging file's size manually was necessary but insufficient. The main problem proved to be a SDHC Card (T:\) which I used for the TEMP files (the carddrive driver (MS) was up to date). Accessing this drive leaded reproducibly to sleeping and/or blue screen and/or restart, though it could be formatted and then some data written and read for a short while. However, Win10 (at least upon system and software updates through MMS) seems to write temp files incorrectly on it, then the crashes happen immediatly upon accessing this drive with the Explorer... though the SDHC card still can be read on another PC !


I now took the SDHC Card out of the drive and defined T:/ as a network drive on the SSD (D:\TEMP…). Necessary as "T:\TEMP" is in countless registry values. Everything seems to perform normally now, though I don't try to use the SDHC Card anymore. Hopefully the next W10 major release will finally resolve the problem.

Windows 10 Tweaks

Pressing “Windows+Pause Break” (it’s up there next to scroll lock) opens the “System” Window.

Windows 10: In the new version of Windows, Explorer has a section called Quick Access. This includes your frequent folders and recent files. Explorer defaults to opening this page when you open a new window. If you’d rather open the usual This PC, with links to your drives and library folders, follow these steps:

• Open a new Explorer window.
• Click View in the ribbon.
• Click Options.
• Under General, next to “Open File Explorer to:” choose “This PC.”
• Click OK
