Windows 10: Windows 10 freezes randomly

I found this thread because I was getting random freezing when using the computer, and random freezing when my computer is not in use and in an idle state. I have my computer set to performance, and nothing is set to go idle but only the monitor and it would randomly freeze all the time. I was very frustrated, and decided to try a few things on this thread, and it appears in my case that it was the swap file that was causing the issue. I forgot that I had a custom swap file, and it appears this was causing the issue, because when I changed the value to a higher state the freezing vanished. Perhaps playing around with the swap file may fix the issue for some of you as well.

 

What did you settings did you use for the page file size? Initial? Maximum?

I am not sure if this has anything to do with the freezing issue but looking at the event viewer again I notice the following at around the time the freezes occur:




Can anyone help me understand exactly what this means?

All my drivers are up to date and i don't see anything in Event Viewer besides windows not being shut down properly. Has anyone found out a working solution.

Perhaps it was the reinstall of the AMD chipset directly from AME's website? I haven't had any freezes since.

 

Same problem here. All drivers and firmware are up to date.
Interestingly the freezes mostly occur while sound is being played back (e.g. You Tube, games or Skype).
Also, once my NAS was woken up from hibernation in the exact same moment the computer froze. Did anyone else notice something like that?

 

When you say "all drivers are up-to-date" do you mean that Windows 10 tells you that there are no new drivers (in driver properties)? Try freeware Driver Booster and DriverMax, they will find TONS of outdated drivers. According to your description, your videocard driver is out-of-date.

Why do you think so? The latest version from the Nvidia homepage is installed.

I did now. It said errors have been corrected, I´ll let you know whether it helped.

 

My advice is to use the above freeware packages to be certain. They often find fully tested certified drivers that are not yet posted on the official websites. This often happens to Intel and RealTek hardware for example.

Hi! I've been following this thread the last couple of days since I've been experiencing the same problem as you guys. Just wanted to share with you what solved it for me. After lots of testing (and trying EVERYTHING) I figured out that it was my Intel display drivers (latest version) that wasn't compatible with f.lux (software that filters blue screen light) that were causing the freezes. When I disabed f.lux the problem disappeared. This issue seems to be quite common when I googled it.

With Windows 10 I guess there might be a 1000 different causes for crashes like this, but this solved it for me.

 

I have the same problem with a brand new Acer Aspire V laptop with a SDD.
I found this and so far it worked for me. Will test it for a week.


Task Manager might show 100% disk utilization on Windows 10 devices with Message Signaled Interrupt (MSI) mode enabled.


Symptoms
Task Manager shows the disk to be at 100% utilization despite a light or no workload, and the system may experience lag or become unresponsive. In addition, the system event log contains numerous events with Event ID 129, which represent resets of the disk controller.


Cause
While device resets can be caused by a varying number of factors, we are aware of issues with some Advanced Host Controller Interface PCI-Express(AHCI PCIe) models that causes these symptoms in Windows 10 when running with the inbox StorAHCI.sys driver. Due to a firmware bug, the Solid-state drive (SSD) does not properly complete input/output when Message Signaled Interrupt (MSI) mode is enabled. As a result, the Windows storage stack attempts to reset the device after waiting on unresponsive reads or writes for a period of time.

Just had another freeze. Was running fine for the past day and a half or so, since I reinstalled the AMD drivers.
Just got done a 3 hour gaming session, installing some software add-ons for the game,and it locked up while viewing the one website. The only error was about 11 minutes prior to the system lock up. TCP/IP event 4230

 

Hello guys, I'm having the same problem and annoys me as hell, but mine is different. It always happens in three occasions
1-When I change the display from the monitor to the TV to watch movies and stuff by unplugging the display port and plugging the HDMI that is connected to the TV. It happens right away. Also, when I go back to the monitor from the TV again, it happens right away which forces me to force-restart the computer.
2- While installing Samsung Magician SSD software since I have a Samsung EVO SDD. it freezes before the installation completes.
3-While troubleshooting the computer for problems from the control panel, happens while checking.

The whole screen freezes and nothing can make it work again and the mouse cursor will never move.
When I had windows 8.1, I had none of these weird problems. Did a clean install 3 times, but no chance. Same thing happens always. Anyone have the same situation as mine, or does anyone have a solution?

I have uninstalled Acronis True Image HD 2014 and my system seems to go fine now.

 

Well, unfortunatly, it did not solved the problem... *Sad

 

Removed wifi card and driver, disabled ethernet driver, purchased new usb wifi and ethernet to usb adapter. The freezing continues. Disconnect from the internet and the PC runs perfectly - but my business is internet related. Connecting Wifi will freeze the PC within minutes, where running a LONG ethernet cable from my cable modem may give me a couple of hours occasionally.

I have updated all drivers I can.

So not looking forward to clean install - will take days to set up.
