What the **** is svchost.exe (netsvcs), akamai technologies, downloading to my PC?

Windows 10 Update uses P2P technology to deliver Updates and I think this is related.

Yes, it is probably the Creators Update downloading in the background

If you want to check if this is the case:

Go to Settings App - Update and Security - Updates - Advanced Options

Somewhere, depending on the version of Windows 10 you are running, there is a setting 'Choose how Updates are Delivered'. Turn off the file sharing option that allows your PC to send parts of your updates to other PC's

  3. UPDATED 11/24: Looks like Version 1511 Fall Update has been pulled from Downloads

Here is the official statement regarding this:

The November update was originally available via the MCT (Media Creation Tool), but the company decided that future installs should be through Windows Update. People can still download Windows
10 [Build 10240] using the MCT tool if they wish. The November update will be delivered via Windows Update.

Microsoft has not pulled the Windows 10 November 10 update. The company is rolling out the November update over time – if you don’t
see it in Windows Update, you will see it soon.

I think they had to.. think about the backlog when the upgrade occurs. This way the traffic is spread out properly.

I wonder how you seed a local computer to make it available to get updates and apps from?

That would require storing the downloaded files permanently somewhere that other computers on your network can get them from.

I didn't think torrents were safe. I read you could get bad and even illegal stuff.

Not all torrents are bad.. If MS sets it up properly there shouldn't be any issues.

My opinion I think it is to risky. If I am understand torrents correctly, it passes through different people computers. What if one of those computer had a virus and passes it on to others computers. I guess you would have to execute the virus but an update is automatically executed. My cable system hates torrents, they throttle them to dial-up speed or even worse from what I read. Microsoft better have an alternate for updates and releases since a lot of Internet service provides throttle torrents.

Yes and No.. if MS set up the servers to store the files to be downloaded then it goes from there to your PC and not through other peoples PC's. The yes it true for other download that you get from other that are sharing files. The need for P2P for Win10 is due to the load that the upgrades will incur when the RTM comes out later this year. If they don't do this the backlog will be incredible. IMO In addition you're not using a tool like Bittorrent to get any of the files/updates/upgrades.

If the torrent file comes from a confident source... it's totally safe. The client software calculates the checksum (md5 / sha1) of the files and compares it with the original hash value. If a file is slightly different (if it contains a malicious code for example) the hashes won't match and nothing will be downloaded.

Happily my ISP is torrent friendly.

They've used it for a while, I beleive it's techical term is 'Commercial Hybrid Content Delivery System'. Given the news they're now planning to use it for Windows Updates, at least I now know why I was previously jumped upon for critisizing it due to treating peoples PC's like P2P clients and using consumers bandwidth, hardware and energy to distribute content on the behalf of companies.

BitTorrent(i'm sure the backend for Microsoft's stuff is probably the same with some slight mods) for transferring files is extremely secure from tampering enroute. Either way.. the whole using consumers 'bandwidth, hardware, and energy?' No one cares so long as the connection terminates when the files finish downloading. The only thing they care about is getting their files in a timely manner at max download speed.

Keep in mind if they distribute Windows 10 by the Web(and probably issue you an install disk if you want one by mail for $20 or so), you're probably talking at the minimum a 5-20 gig download. I actually expect them to make it on by default.

Really.. nobody cares and its sort of expected as the sheer load from the first month is going to be ten shades of insane. Its going to dwarf anything that has come before it for sheer bandwidth usage.

The only way that could happen is if the update files were stored on peoples computers. My thought/assumption is that MS will set up servers around the world that will store these update files and that's were the P2P will get them from..
