Windows 10- have to force shutdown via power button

    Windows 10 x64

Until a few days ago, my laptop used to shutdown ie hybrid quickly. Now, my laptop refuses to shutdown unless I use the power button to force a shutdown.

I have checked to see whether it was because of an update, but this is not the case.

    I have run virus/malware scans.
My laptop reports the disk is OK.
I have run scannow and no integrity violations.

I would be grateful for help please.

    :)

  2. Unable to find any pictures I have taken since Cyan Update

Can you hook it up to a PC and browse it via File Explorer?

BTW, a soft reset is just a reboot. You can do that by holding down just the power button until the slide down to power off screen is shown, and sliding down the lock screen as it prompts. It is the equivalent of rebooting your PC, or powering it off using
shutdown, and turning it back on. The power button/volume button is a forced shutdown, generally used if the device isn't responding. It is like your PC is frozen and you hold down the power button till it forcibly shuts down. The normal shutdown, is better
if you are just trying to cleanup the device (or PC). The forced shutdown is there if something is locked up, or frozen.

  3. After upgrading to Windows 10, my computer won't shut down or sleep properly.

Hi Mark, as far as I'm concerned, none of the issues have been resolved. If I shut down having used the laptop for about 10 minutes it powers off o.k. but if used any longer I then have to force a shutdown via the power on/off button. If when in use and
unattended and it goes into sleep mode, I'm unable to wake it, and again have to force a shutdown & re-boot. Unfortunately any unsaved work is lost. My grandson has the identical HP laptop which was upgraded from Windows 8.1 to Windows 10 the day before mine,
and his works perfectly. I just don't understand and just regret upgrading.

@infotech, do you mean you have to press and hold the power button until it kills the power abruptly?

If so, you could try disabling fast start-up in Control panel > Power options - Choose what the power button does' (you'll need to click 'Change settings that are currently unavailable'). For good measure, delete the hiberfil.sys that it uses by opening a Command Prompt (Admin) and typing:
    powercfg /hibernate off

If you can now shut down properly, try undoing the changes. Use 'powercfg /hibernate on' then the Control Panel's Power options. It may be that settings got corrupted and remaking them will sort it.

Thank you so much for your reply.

Yes, that is exactly what I mean.

I had thought of that, but I would like to find out why this has suddenly happened.

I did lookin Event Viewer, but I don't understand how to use it!
