Windows 10 Home v1803 with updates as at July 2018 AND Crucial 500GB SSD - Windows and...

Windows 10 and applications (eg Excel 2013) randomly FREEZE when using a Crucial 500GB SSD in a Toshiba Qosmio core i7 15.6inch screen laptop (circa 2011). I replaced the Hitashi 5200rpm 750GB harddisk in the Toshiba laptop to get faster response when starting/using laptop with a Crucial SSD and used the supplied Acronis True Image software to image the harddisk to the SSD.

All works well (ie boots fast and applications open) until daily MS update checks and any updates; after which usually the applications (Microsoft or others) FREEZE and/or Windows 10 FREEZEs. After waiting more than 2 hours - I give up and initiate a forced shutdown.

I switch back to the harddisk and there are no update or operating issues - except the slow speed of starting up PC and applications.

I have attempted various tests and "fixes" since April 2018 until latest in July 2018 (over 4 months of Windows 10 monthly patch releases).

I have made a number of attempts of reimaging from working harddisk to SSD for each of these tests and "fixes" but todate without success.

Although the laptop is old (circa 2011) it has not had a 'hard life' and has features I use/value that modern laptops do not have.

Does anyone have any useful suggestions to resolve this issue?

    :)

  3. Microsoft blocks Windows 10 April Update for Intel SSD 600p Series

Microsoft is blocking some Intel SSDs from installing the April 2018 Update after discovering an incompatibility issue that causes performance and stability issues. In short, the problem was explained by Microsoft as: “When attempting to upgrade to Window 10 April 2018 Update select devices with certain Intel SSDs may enter a UEFI screen reboot or crash repeatedly.” Microsoft says that this issue has no workaround and that those that have attempted to update Windows 10 to the Windows 10 April 2018 Update should revert back to Windows 10 Fall Creators Update version 1709.

Unfortunately, the announcement by Microsoft fails to list what specific Intel SSD models are having issues with the OS update. We contacted Intel and discovered that the Intel SSD 600p Series of client drives that was first introduced to the market in 2016 is the most popular drive that is having issues.

Windows 10 1803 doesn't play nice with some Intel SSDs

Intel SSD problem seems to be resolved by installing the KB4100403 cumulative update for v1803.
