    Windows 10 Install on Minimal Storage Size?


    My objective is to create a Windows 10 VM with a minimal disk size, but that still has "desktop experience" tools like File Explorer. I found that IoT Core "must include a minimum of 2 GB of storage", which seems perfect. However, simply mounting the ISO as a CD and booting from it doesn't launch the standard Windows 10 installer, like the other Windows 10 ISOs do.

    In comparison, Windows 10 v1903 and later have a minimum size of 32 GB, while Windows 10 IoT Enterprise 64-bit has a minimum size of 20 GB.

    Is there a way to override the "minimum space requirements" on the standard Windows 10 installer, or is better to use a minimal SKU to begin with like IoT Core? Note that this is just for a proof of concept, so as long as simple things work like creating and deleting a text document and using file explorer, performance isn't a concern.

    Note that I have an MSDN account, so I am able to obtain all these SKUs. Also this is for a very specific use-case, I have already created a Windows 10 template with a standard disk size of 80 GB.

    Tl;dr: What is the best approach to install Windows 10 on as small a disk as possible?

    I'm going to be building a new PC on Christmas and want to install Windows 10 on it. I have Windows 10 on my current PC, which I installed upgrading from 8.1 with the files on a USB. How do I go about installing a clean copy of Windows 10 on this new PC? I think I recall something about installing it once makes Microsoft recognize your hardware, but since this will be a PC I'm not sure what steps I need to take. Do I need to go 8.1 -> 10 or is there a method of going directly to 10?
