I would think that should be fine, but if you are concerned, then save the ISO to your WD drive, and burn that to a DVD. Then do the upgrade with the DVD. See option #2.

Hi there. Not to overstep my bounds into yours, for I think you're doing a great job leading here, but IMO an in-house upgrade from his C: drive would be best. Less chance of corrupted ISO and a time saver. He has plenty of room. Trouble is that I'm so far from W7 and can't remember if it can mount the ISO in a virtual drive like 10 can?

I agree Hypsie and there are instructions how to mount an ISO in W7.
I believe it's included in this link?
and select upgrade, keeping apps and files (begin at step 5)

Ok, but he's in 7. Can 7 mount the ISO in a virtual drive like 10 can or will he have to go the optic drive avenue?

BTW, aren't you glad these options are included with these new OSs?

Oh yes, sorry. Here is the link for mounting an ISO in Windows 7:
ISO - Disk Image File : Extract to the Desktop - Windows 7 Help Forums
Actually, you don't mount the ISO, you extract the files in it.
I had to leave for a few hours...sorry about that.

Yes! Makes life so much easier! *Smile

edit: I believe it's included in this link?
and select upgrade, keeping apps and files (begin at step 5)

The first link shows how to extract files from an ISO in W7. The second link shows how to do an in-place upgrade.

    @Axington
If you run into any problems upgrading now, I'm going to pinpoint the AMD CCC (Catalyst Control Center). This had been causing issues in the past, although I thought it had been resolved. If need be, I believe you can uninstall CCC without removing your actual graphics drivers. That may or may not be an issue for you - just wanted to mention it.

I asked this earlier in the thread but never got an answer on it and just wanna make sure: Should I uninstall security essentials first?

Yes. Please do that. It is not compatible with Windows 10. Windows 10 uses Defender. (I did answer that earlier.) *Wink

I must have missed that. Thank you. It's getting somewhat late here, so I'm probably going to start this pretty soon. I'll tell you guys how it went tomorrow. Thanks so much for the help.

It still crashed at that same point. I'm pretty sure I did everything you had originally told me. Does that mean this is because of CCC? I tried to uninstall CCC but couldn't find an uninstall wizard for just that, everything wanted to remove my drivers and all sorts of stuff. What should I do now?

Edit: I was able to uninstall CCC without getting rid of my drivers. Is there anything else I should do before trying again at the installation?
Also, is there a reason for me to be using the ISO and not windows update to download and install it?

I would wait for simrick's answer, but the ISO route would probably be a little quicker and less chance of any corruption with installing. You would also have the ISO in case you would want to fresh install again. I would go ahead and mount it on a DVD or USB stick if possible. You can still do the in-house C: drive install as well too.

    Good luck to you.

Edit: To be sure > You must upgrade first though so it activates. Then you can fresh install ad infinitum after that.

Okay, good. People had been posting that the CCC issue had been resolved, but perhaps it is not in all cases.
Upgrades that fail early on are usually an indication of driver issues; this CCC had been a problem for quite some time, and so that's why I flagged it.

Did you get the all clear from sfc /scannow? This is an important step.

I agree with @HippsieGypsie; the ISO-upgrade would probably be the best route. If it asks for a key, just select "skip" (it may do this a few times). [Note: If you do not have the skip option, it's because you have the wrong type of ISO - either the wrong architecture or the wrong version, home vs. pro.] Make sure you select "keep files and apps" or "keep files", whichever you prefer.

If you still have an issue after removing CCC, we'll probably need to start evaluating your drivers and installed programs.
@HippsieGypsie, I will be unavailable now for a few hours. If you're around, I would very much appreciate it if you could keep an eye on this thread. Thanks.

I definitely chose the right ISO.
When I did the scannow yesterday, it returned no issues. I'll do it again just to be safe.
    ...
    ...
    Nope, no integrity violations.
So then, nothing else really to try before I try the installation again?

Not that I can think of. Go ahead and start the process. Others and I will be here if you have any questions. Good luck.
