Windows 10: Windows 10 installation has failed.

I don't know much about these things but it looks to me that this is the key error:

Is there anything on your setup which might mean that it couldn't copy that file to C:\$WINDOWS.~BT\Sources, perhaps?

 

Are you thinking an antivirus or something like that?

In post# 1, you said: My harddrive has 38GB free ... but you didn't say how must space was used.

When you do an upgrade, it takes more space - the previous OS and your data is backed up to Windows.old the install files are copied to the boot drive and.... and the files are installed to the boot drive. Then things are cleaned up.

Your free space might be right on the line. Let's see what Disk management says about the used / free space, it it's close then there are two avenues you can take.

Free up some space 25 GB is enough to test ... Clean install Win10 as a dual boot.
Free up some space ???? by moving your data files off of the boot drive and try the upgrade again.

The first is esiest - you already have enough space, all you have to do is figure out how to create a new partition - that's where the disk management screen shot will help a lot. If you already have 4 partions, and your drive was initialized MBR, then there's a bit more work.

While you have Disk management open, open the view menu and select Top > disk list. The far right column in the top pane will be MBR or GPT - post that screen shot too please.

Your welcome, I got lazy a while ago and put many of the more commonly referenced tutorials in Post templates. All have to do is make sure that I post the right one *Wink

 

I've been suffering this problem for ~24 hours and think I've got the fix (at least, this worked for me):
There was a failed Windows upgrade in a $Windows.~BT folder, Windows 10 created a .~BT1 folder and put its files in there;
but then tried to update from the original .~BT folder; obviously failing because the files it wants are not in there.

I took ownership of both, and deleted the contents - not easy, you have to drill-down into sub folders and own/delete all files
(just keep going until it lets you delete the whole lot).
Use Windows Disk Cleanup, and take the "System Files" option; make sure you clear out any previous updates, failed updates etc.
This freed up 20Gb - so I was sure everything had gone.
Download the .iso and run install from a USB stick - it worked !
