    Windows 10 Installation/Repair/Update problems - help please

    Hi Folks

I an really, Really, REALLY getting annoyed with this.

This thread details the history of the issues over the past few weeks ... Black Screen after Windows Update (Windows 10) See in particular posts #17 and 18 of that thread.

I finally managed to get my Windows 10 installation working and eventually get it back to something like it was before the update borked the machine.

Now, the machine has reverted to its "repaired" state of a few days ago after a restart - all of the changes I made to the start menu and getting 'My Documents' and 'My Pictures' to point to the correct locations have been reset.

Can anyone say what is going on with this machine and OS installation?

It is doing my head in!

Hi, I would suggest you may have a problem with your hard disk. At least I assume it's a hard disk as your specs are not complete.

First thing to do is complete your specs, and
    From an admin command prompt
[Windows key + X, click command prompt (admin)]
    chkdsk C: /F
Your PC will need to restart.
Make sure the result is clear or fixed- else do not proceed.
Post back the result, which you can get after a restart as follows:
How do I see the results of a CHKDSK that ran on boot? - Ask Leo!

Also install and run Crystal diskinfo, and post a screenshot like this:

I have no idea why you should need to do this:
all of the changes I made to the start menu and getting 'My Documents' and 'My Pictures' to point to the correct locations have been reset.
    - unless perhaps at some point you have relocated these? Could you advise?

    Hi

Thanks for the reply. Don't know how to run Crystal diskinfo - never heard of that.

Currently running a system file check and will follow this up with a check disk (i'm presuming that the /F switch is 'fix'?)

Machine does indeed have a HDD - a 750GB WD Black.

I've run various tests on it and all come up clean.

Searching for Crystal DiskInfo with Google.

    I'll update this thread shortly

You've got a lot of values that have a zero threshold where your drive has recorded numbers in a range from 100-200. A zero threshold value means that such events should basically not or never occur. When they do, they're often a sign of a failing drive. My advice, unless you're really strapped for cash, would be to replace the drive as soon as possible. If you are really strapped for cash I've got some Samsung 1 TB spinpoint 2.5" drives I'd be willing to give you for the price of packing and shipping them to you.
    Whaddya say?

    Thanks guys...

Not sure where to go with this one. One of you says 'disk is failing' another says 'seems fine to me'.

Here is the result of Chkdsk c: /f

Windows 10 Installation/Repair/Update problems - help please [IMG]

Disk seems OK to me. However, I'll get another WD Black drive and clone my original Win 7 installation (with all of my installed progs and data) onto the new HDD (as I did with the current (problematic?) HDD).

I can then upgrade the OS to Win 10 (this was the Win 7 OS that was originally upgraded last year and as the NIC and CPU/Mobo is the same, it should go OK) then copy across all the recent documents and i should be back where I was 3 weeks ago when this whole debacle started.

This sound like a plan folks?

    Additional:

Every restart of the machine creates a Temporary Profile so bookmarks, saved images etc are unavailable without some digging.

Will try a Windows 10 'repair' and let you know what happens.

Write error rate, uncorrectable sector count, reallocation event count, reallocated sectors: all those seem a bit high to me. Goes off to compare with local system drives to see how other spinning disks compare ... they are higher than on most of my drives, except one, and it has a yellow caution symbol and beats yours for current pending sector count and uncorrectable sector count. So perhaps your drive is tolerable, but mine is not, and I'll swap it out this weekend. So thanks, anyway, ArtDent and SuperFly, for making me look.
    HTH,

Hi, see this detail about temporary profiles- which explains as you know your problems as expressed in your previous thread and here about your user folders apparently not being correct.

BEST FIX: How to Fix issues in Windows 10 - Appuals.com

This may let you deal with your profile problem. Worth a look.

Try a SMART check on your new disk for comparison.

I'm not sure why the hardware was even questioned in the first place... that HDD is relatively new (going by Power On)...and all tests came up roses IMO...

Do clean install and copy back (that's what I did with my borked upgrade)

    Windows 10 Installation/Repair/Update problems - help please

If this machine was previously upgraded to Win10 you don't need to do a clean install of Win7. Copy your files to another disk and just do a clean install of Win10. You should have a digital entitlement from prior upgrade so skip the entry of your product key.

    Hmmmm but....

"Removing the HDD and putting it in an external USB caddy, I can read all the files/data in the drive - such as photos and documents which leads me to suspect that the update screwed the boot area of the OS somehow."

Either way, I see where you are coming from *Wink

    Thanks for the replies chaps.

There is definitely something flaky about this WD Black HDD.

Every time I shut the machine down and do a cold boot, I get a temporary profile when the machine is next switched on.

Going to get a new HDD, clone my old Win 7 HDD onto the new HDD (so that I don't have to spend a week putting all my old installed programs back) and then upgrade the machine to Win 10.

Not as good as a clean install I agree.

Anyone suggest a fast 2.5in HDD that is under 1TB (as one of my programs won't run for some reason if the HDD is 1Tb or larger)!

Are the WD Black drives still top o' the heap??
