Windows 10 - installing to Program Files folder instead of Program Files x86

I'm having an issue installing an application into the Program Files folder in Windows 10. For some reason, even though I select that folder as the destination, the system instead installs the program to Program Files x86. However unfortunately, it's imperative that I install to the other Program Files folder in order to be able to run a necessary application update it's an older application.

The permissions for users appear to be the same for both of these folders, so I don't understand why it does not work. I've already tried activating the administrator and logging in as administrator to load the program - same result, it still installs to Program Files x86. I've tried to temporarily change the ownership on the Program Files folder from trusted installer to allow me control, the system will not grant this change either.

So! How do I get the system to install the application to the Program Files folder as instructed?

    :)

Partitioning Program Files/Program Files(x86) from Windows 10 install?

In the coming week I will be installing Windows 10 Home on my new computer. I will be using an SSD and an HDD, the SSD for the OS, programs and games and the HDD for photos, music and all the other slow stuff.
So, my question. In case the OS were to ever get corrupted, or I had to reinstall the OS for any other reason, is it possible to have the SSD set up as follows; Partition 1 - OS, Partition 2 - Program Files/Program Files((x86) plus other associated folders/files) and Partition 3 for my games, so that any re-install does not wipe out my already installed programs?

I had no problem doing this in with my XP desktop(OS in C and Progs in D, although not perfect, but was never able to do it with Windows 7.

    Can it be done?

    Tom.

program files and program files x86

    Hi louandtootsosmundson

The Program Files folder and the Program Files (x86) folders must be kept separate to avoid conflicts

Window will automatically handle those folders, placing 64bit applications in the Program Files Folder and 32bit applications in the Program Files (x86) folder

Are the Program Files and Program Files (x86) folders important?

    Hi,

I was wondering how important the two mentioned folders are when installing a software. I know most programs suggest being installed to one of them, but it is really necessary? What happens if I choose another folder?

I use the game client Steam for example. It wants to go into C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam

Does it matter if I place it in C:\Another Folder\Steam?

Are there any programs that MUST be installed in either Program Files or Program Files (x86) to work properly?

On my desktop computer I have one SSD disk (C) and one regular hard disk (D). Here I have always installed software to D:\Program Files and never seen any issues with that (note that this Program Files folder was made by me and not by Windows. Those folders are located on the C drive but never used by me).

The reason I'm asking is because I'd like to sync a few folders from a software located in \Program Files\ using Synology Cloud Station. For some reason it does not have access to the Program Files folders on the C drive (but it can access the one on D drive).
