Windows 10 is going back to Windows 7-like UI for app windows

Windows 10 will be returning to a look from the Windows 7, Vista and XP era as Microsoft is planning to embrace rounded corners for top-level windows.

Up until metro UI-based Windows 8, Microsoft has been using aero effect and rounded corners across all app windows. However, the approach changed after Windows 8 was released with sharp corners and live tiles.

According to a new clarification issued by Microsoft on Github, Windows 10’s highly-anticipated WinUI will also bring rounded corners to top-level windows and pop-ups of apps, but implementation will be up to the app developers.

This means you can expect app windows with rounded corners, similar to the default layout that we had on Windows.

As you can see in the mockup screenshot of Teams desktop app below, Microsoft is clearly replacing the sharp edges that served as the foundation of Windows 8’s Metro UI.

This restyled UI is part of the Fluent Design makeover, as the company itself confirmed in its GitHub project.

Rounded corners are supposed to go live in the second half of 2021, but as it typically happens when major changes are released, Microsoft will first allow testers in the Windows Insider program to try the new UI before others.

If we’re lucky and Microsoft sticks to its own internal schedule, we might get a glimpse of Windows 10’s new UI in the preview builds by Spring 2021 (Q3-Q5).

The other big aesthetic changes are coming to Windows 10 app icons. Earlier this year, Microsoft introduced a new standard icon shape that looks a lot more colourful and curved.

The design language is still Fluent Design, but it’s constantly evolving and it now puts emphasis on shadows and round edges.

It’s also worth noting that new rounded corners design is already a part of key Windows 10 apps including Calculator, Alarms & Clock, Calendar, and even Windows Terminal. In fact, new rounded corners design is actively used in the new Chromium-based Edge browser.

Metro UI Tweaker: Make Windows 8 Look Like Windows 7

For those of you trying out the Windows 8 developer release who already hanker for the old Windows 7 look, help is now at hand! Enter Metro UI Tweaker from The Windows Club. From the screenshots below, you can see that things like the Explorer Ribbon and the Metro Start menu can be turned off. It can do a lot more, however.

Note: This application requires the enabling of .NET Framework 3.5.1 on the Windows 8 developer preview as follows:
1 Fire up Control Panel then click on More Settings and go Programs > Programs and Features > Turn Windows features on or off
2 Select .NET Framework 3.5.1 from the listing and click OK
3 Windows will connect to Windows Update to download the required files
4 When that’s done, you’re good to go

The tweaks currently being offered are:

1 Disable Metro Start menu: Disables only Metro Start menu screen. This function requires editing a system file. It does not remove the file
2 Disable Metro Ribbon: Disables only the Metro Ribbon UI. It requires taking ownership of a system file. It does not remove this file
3 Disable Metro Start menu and Ribbon: Disables the Metro Start menu UI, Ribbon UI, Metro Task Manager UI and the lock screen
4 Enable Metro Start menu and Ribbon: Re-enables all available Metro UI options
5 Add power options to the Metro Start menu screen: Logoff, Switch User, Lock, Sleep, Restart and Shutdown
6 Add any application/file to the Metro UI Start menu screen: Some applications/files may not be available to you to add to the Metro Start menu screen. This program allows you to add those applications/files which would otherwise be unavailable

When first run, the program will generate a folder in your Windows directory labelled Metro UI Tools. This folder is there to keep your power option apps in place without worrying about them having to be moved. Once generated and the files are unpacked from the program, do not remove the folder or the power apps from this folder as these options will no longer be available and may generate errors. The program works on 32-bit and 64-bit operating systems. It's constantly being refined, so check the Windows Club website regularly for updates.

Windows 8.1, and Why You Should Let Go of Windows 7

Well if im killing PC by using windows 7 then let it die
Windows 8 has some good things but the UI is a huge step in the wrong direction
As many others have said it is optimized for touch, good thing the majority of enthusiast don't own a touch enabled monitor.
If i wanted a metro styled UI to fumble through i would just by an xbox.
