Windows 10: Windows 10 is showing duplicate folders for Downloads, Documents, Images, Music, etc.

A few weeks ago I installed a SSD on my computer and transfered everything I had on my old HDD to the SSD, including Windows 10.

The new drive is a Samsung SSD 860 EVO 500GB and I used the software Samsung Data Migration to do the transfer, as recommended by Samsung.


Recently Windows Explorer is showing duplicate Windows folders: Documents, Downloads, Music and so on. Please see below. My Windows is in portuguese but you can recognize the folders by their icons. One of each folder has its name and is accessible while the duplicate folder can not be opened and nothing happens when I click on it. It does not cause problems, just clutter.


How can I fix this?

Windows 10 version 1607 x64 Duplication of documents, music, pictures and downloads folders

Dear community and Windows 10 support,

I am now having this problem and don't know how to remove the empty folder content duplication:

Why do I have duplicate 'Documents' 'Downloads' 'Music' 'Pictures' and 'Videos' folders? - Build 10061

Before the upgrade was done, I redirected documents, music, pictures and download folders to my data drive (from C: to D.

After the upgrade I did 23 September, those folders are listed again in my user directory in C:, duplicating what I did in D before the upgrade.

Help appreciated!

 

Duplicate Public Folders

Hope this helps someone identify the problem.

• Q: What happens when you delete the duplicate folders?
• A: Nothing. They're successfully deleted.

• Q: Does it happen to all of your folders or only those with pictures?
  • A: Only the default Public Folders (Documents, Pictures, Music, Videos).
  • A: All of the Public Folders have customized folder icons.
  • A: The above image shows yellow, empty folder icons (duplicates).

• Q: Any steps you've tried to troubleshoot this issue?
  • Actually, this has been a problem since Windows 7.
  • What I noticed then is that certain Windows programs created the duplicates:
    • Windows Media Player (stopped using)
    • Internet Explorer (stopped using)
    • Plus others, which I can't recall.
  • Only certain programs for Windows 10, as well:
    • Microsoft Edge (don't use it often)
      
    • Groove Music (never intentionally use it)
      
    • Plus others, which I haven't tracked.
      • I only notice it when I go to Public Folders.
      • By then, I've long since forgotten what was accessed.
  • I've googled for answers but most of those only address
    moving the Public Folders to another Drive.

 

Downloads folder is the Documents folder

I suggest you to Restore to Default the folders and document settings and see if it helps.

Step 1:

Please follow below steps and check if it helps.

• Go to Download folder.
• Right click on the Download Folder and go to Properties.
• In Properties go to Location tab.
• In location Tab Click on Restore Default.

Step 2:

Please follow below steps and check if it helps.

• Go to Documents folder.
• Right click on the Document folder and go to Properties.
• In Properties go to Location tab.
• In location Tab Click on Restore Default.

After performing above steps change the settings as you required and check if it helps.
