Windows 10: Windows 10 keeps changing display and keyboard language

Hey everyone,


I just got a new laptop and I've had trouble with language settings right from the beginning.

The laptop is purchased in Germany and had german as default language. I wanted (and could do this with every windows device in the past without any problem at all) to change the display/system language to "English (US)" while keeping the german keyboard layout. But it kept changing to either German or English (UK) which I never even installed in the first place. But after a few tries it worked like I wanted it to.

Now after turning it off and on again the laptop changed the keyboard layout to English (US) although only the german layout is installed for this language. While trying to fix this I downloaded the german language pack hoping I could find a way to select the layout then. But all it did was adding German and English (UK) to the display language list while removing English (US) entirely.

How can I stop Windows from downloading languages I never asked it to, and keep my settings as English (US) with a german keyboard layout? Why did it work on any PC and Laptop I had before but not on this one (it's a HP Pavilion x360 btw)?

Windows 8.1 update changed the language, can't change back

Maybe, these will help... it seems it is a common enough problem.

Language packs are no longer available after you upgrade to Windows 8.1

Change your Windows display language
To change your Windows display language (that's the language you see most often in Windows and apps), first add a language, download and install the language pack, and then follow these steps.

  (If you're using a mouse, point to the lower-right corner of the screen, move the mouse pointer up, click Settings, and then click Change PC settings.)

• Tap or click Set as primary to move the language to the top of the list. If the language can become your Windows display language, you'll see Will be display language after next sign-in appear under the language.
• Sign out and then sign back in to finish.

How to keep separate *default* display language from keyboard language


I think it's a bug, because when playing around with it, it doesn't necessarily seem to be the Windows Display Language it keeps resetting back to when rebooting. Just now, I managed to get it so that it kept resetting back to my second language when re-booting *Confused.

As such, I'm not aware of a proper fix, but a 'work-a-round' I just found that you can try is go to Settings App, then:

1) Set up your main Windows Display language (Greek), go to Options, add United States INTL keyboard and delete any other keyboards.

2) Add your second language (English), go to Options, add United States INTL keyboard and delete any other keyboards.

3) Then toggle the default language ('Set As Default' button) to the second language (English), and then back to main language (Greek). Don't reboot inbetween toggling them, as doing so will change the entire Windows Display Language to English, which you don't want to do.

4) Now when you re-boot, it should keep changing back to Greek with United States INTL keyboard.










Addition:
If you still want to be able to use a Greek Keyboard for typing as well as the United States INTL keyboard, then the keyboard at the top is the default keyboard for that language (see below screenshot).

You can’t drag & drop to change the keyboard order, therefore the order that the keyboards are added determines the default keyboard for that language. So, in Step 1 add a United States INTL keyboard, remove the Greek keyboard, then re-add the Greek keyboard. This puts the United States INTL keyboard at the top (default) and the Greek Keyboard below it (not default).

Now when re-booting, it should default back to Greek with United States INTL keyboard, but you will have the option to set the Language Input Selector in the Windows TaskBar to either:

- Greek input language with Greek keyboard
- Greek input language with United States INTL keyboard
- English input language with United States INTL keyboard

 

Keyboard language keeps changing

1. Since when are you facing this issue?
   
2. Have you installed Spanish Keyboard in your desktop?
   

You can follow the steps to fix the issue.



Method 1:



Removing other keyboard layouts.

1. Go to Settings > Time & Language >
   Region & Language.
   
2. Click on Spanish
   and Click on Remove.
   
3. Now add the Spanish language again from
   Region & Language under
   Settings.

Monica Cam dated 10th October 2016.



Method 2:



Changing the language preference to English only.

1. Go to Settings > Devices >
   Typing.
   
2. Under More keyboard settings click on
   Advanced keyboard settings.
   
3. Now under Override for default input method select
   English.
   
4. Restart the computer.
