Windows 10 leak hints at removal of old Microsoft Edge

Windows 10 version 20H2 or newer install new Microsoft Edge onto user desktops – whether they want it or not. However, the legacy or old Microsoft Edge is still included in the operating system, which means Windows 10 comes with three different pre-installed browsers – Internet Explorer, old Edge and new Edge.

In a new language pack released for Windows 10 21H2 preview builds, Microsoft appears to have dropped support for legacy Edge browser. This move looks to be part of the company’s plans to remove Microsoft Edge Legacy when the fall 2021 update is released later this year.

Note that the old Edge is still included in the preview builds, but the leak suggests that Microsoft is trying to unify the web browsing experience on Windows. At some point, users won’t be able to access the old Microsoft Edge.

As we mentioned above, Windows 10 now comes with the latest version of Microsoft Edge and user data from older versions of the browser is carried over during the first setup experience.

The Windows maker has already confirmed that the original Edge browser will stop being supported in March and users have been encouraged to use the new version of Microsoft Edge, which is based on Chromium with focus on security and performance.

However, ‘EdgeHTML’ engine integration in Windows and some other Edge related services won’t be removed anytime soon.

Internet Explorer bites the dust in August

Microsoft is also planning to make Internet Explorer browser obsolete by cutting more features. According to the roadmap, Microsoft 365 services and online apps will no longer support Internet Explorer 11.

In other words, if you try to access those services in Internet Explorer, you’ll be redirected to the Chromium Edge. You can still manage your Microsoft account using Internet Explorer, but many features will be unavailable.

In fact, Microsoft is already redirecting Internet Explorer users to Chromium Edge when they try to access popular websites, such as YouTube or Disney.

Microsoft is developing a built-in ad blocker for its Edge browser

"One of the first browser add-ons many people install to improve their online experience is Adblock Plus or something similar. Until recently, Microsoft Edge's lack of support for add-ons put off a lot of would-be users, but reports from Build 2016 suggest that native ad blocking is on its way to the Internet Explorer successor.

Adblock Plus is coming to Edge, but built-in ad blocking would negate the need for such an add-on. A slide shown off and snapped at a Build presentation shows that the next version of Edge, in response to user feedback, will feature ad blocking capabilities. There's no word on delivery timescale, but the upcoming Windows 10 Anniversary Update would seem a likely candidate.

ZDNet's Ed Bott photographed the slide which shows Microsoft's development roadmap built around feedback from testers. Right at the top of the list is reference to plans to create a plugin and extension store for Edge, but it's entry number four that's more intriguing.

"Build ad blocking features into the browser" is listed as a Feature Request from users. But the good news is that it is not only listed as being "Deliverable 4682811", but as "Targeted for the next version".

This will no doubt come as good news for those who have fallen in love with Edge, but it's not something that will be welcomed by the likes of Adblock Plus. It does seem that, particularly in the mobile arena, there is a move to baking ad blocking into the browser so it makes sense that Microsoft is following the trend. But it is the fact that Edge straddles Windows 10 on the desktop and Windows 10 Mobile that makes this a particularly interesting move.

Keep an eye out for Insider builds in the coming weeks as the feature may be just around the corner.
