Windows 10 leak reveals upcoming and cancelled features

With the release of Windows 10, Microsoft has instituted a modern Settings interface to help users customize and change the default configuration. In general, the Settings app interface is adequate for most user’s needs and Microsoft is now planning to make the Control Panel replacement even better.

In the fresh preview builds, Microsoft is experimenting with a new feature called ‘User cleanup recommendations’. This can be found in the Storage Settings and it basically allows users to find unnecessary or unused files.

Likewise, Microsoft is also bringing the ‘Archive apps’ feature to the Settings app. This was first spotted in preview builds earlier this year, but the option was removed for some reasons and Windows 10 Build 21277 has finally reinstated it.

As the name suggests, this feature will automatically offload and delete the apps while keeping the files and settings in the cloud. Archive apps feature will work for apps available in the Microsoft Store only and Windows 10 will automatically download and install the archived apps when you want.

    Battery monitor

Windows 10 Settings app is finally getting a new battery monitor with complete information about your screen activity and more.

As you can see in the above screenshot, Windows 10 will also get support for battery usage graphs for your activities in the last 24 hours or 7 days

    Taskbar settings

Microsoft is experimenting with improved Taskbar customization settings. As part of the next update, Microsoft will be moving some options from the Taskbar context menu (right-click menu) to the main Settings app.

Various important options (Task View and Search box) will move from the context menu to the Settings. This will simplify the experience, but it will also prevent users from customizing Taskbar on non-activated Windows 10 machine.

    Lock screen

Windows 10’s default lock screen is getting a new feature that will use the accelerometer on your device to rotate the background wallpaper.

    Windows Sets (cancelled)

In the latest preview builds, references to the Windows Sets feature has been spotted again. This isn’t the first time we have seen such references and it again suggests that Sets could still become a reality.

For those unaware, Windows Sets is a tab-based interface for app windows and it was previously tested with Windows Insiders in 2018. Sets feature was supposed to allow users to group certain apps and navigate between them in the same window, and add tabs to the File Explorer

Microsoft originally said that the feature would come back in future, but rumours suggested that the idea has been scrapped.

    Windows Timeline (cancelled)

Microsoft was also planning to launch a feature called ‘Timeline with location’. This could have allowed Windows 10 to use Cortana service on PC and phone to display location details with what’s on your timelines.

Since the Cortana app has been discontinued on Android and Timeline has been removed from Microsoft Launcher, it’s likely that Windows 10 Timeline won’t get support for cross-platform locations.

Windows 7 top feature request list leaked to the public

With Windows still managing to find its way to over 95 percent of the desktop computers sold each year, it's not surprising that one can find plenty of people interested in giving their feedback about what future versions of Windows should be able to do.

A few years ago, before Windows Vista had even shipped, Microsoft sent out a wish list form asking people what features they would like to see in the next version of Windows, currently code-named Windows 7. The top wished-for features in this list were recently leaked to the public and have popped up at various sites (e.g., Neowin). While anonymous sources at Microsoft tell us that they bear no relationship to the actual feature set Microsoft is currently writing for Windows 7, the list does provide interesting insight into what the Windows-using public most wants from Windows.

The features are listed in no particular order, but they break down into various categories depending on what part of Windows the feature request falls under. Many requests for improvements in Internet Explorer, such as a session restore function, are fairly obvious wishes for features that already exist in competitive products such as Firefox and Opera. Other suggestions, such as a tabbed Windows Explorer, look for features from web browsers to migrate into the general user interface.

Some of the feature requests are clearly unrealistic, such as the desire to "back up" Xbox 360 games to the PC (yeah, I don't think Microsoft will be doing that one). Others are minor user interface enhancements that would be nice additions but wouldn't really change the Windows experience, such as a progress bar when hibernating the system. However, there are a few that make good sense and would be welcome additions to the operating system, such as a built-in video and audio codec manager.

A Windows 7 insider who wishes to remain anonymous told Ars that the leaked feature list was gathered before any real development on Windows 7 was started, and readers should not expect to see requests from the list necessarily implemented in Microsoft’s next major Windows release.
