Windows 10: Windows 10 Mail automatically downloaded infected attachment without consent

Windows 10 Mail automatically downloaded a PDF attachment infected with a trojan virus from a phishing email. The file was saved onto my hard drive in LocalState user files where I later found other benign attachments collected. My current theory is that Mail caches all attachments this way but frustratingly It’s been hard to get a confirmation from support. I have found no option to disable this behaviour so far. This seems a huge and unnecessary security risk to me.


How can I prevent automatic email attachment downloads?


Why is this on by default?


Will this option be reset the next time Windows 10 updates?


Why is support unfamiliar with this issue?

I suggest you to follow the below steps and check if the issue resolves.

• Open Windows Mail App.
• Click on the Gear Icon/ Settings on the left bottom.
• Select Reading in the right corner.
• Turn Off Automatically download external images and Style Fonts.
• Restart the Application and check if the issue resolves.

Attachments will not download on Windows 10 mail

I recently purchased a new computer with Windows 10 installed. The Windows 10 Mail does not open many of the attachments and when you lick download attachments nothing happens. Any suggested solution to this issue?

To attach a document file on an email, you can follow the step given below:

For Windows 10 Mobile:

• Launch to File Explorer app.
• Press and hold the file that you need to attach on the email, and select
  Share button.
• Select Outlook Mail on the suggested applications.

For Windows Phone 8.1:

• Download and install
  Files app.
• Launch Files app.
• Tap and hold the document that you need to attach on the email, and select
  Share button.
• Select the Mail app on the suggested applications.
