Windows 10 Mail Indicates a Phantom Unread Message

I'm using the simple Windows 10 mail app. Under "Accounts" I have an IMAP mail account and it has no indicator (no number) next to the account name indicating number of unread mails. That makes sense because I have no unread mail in that account. It's a gmail based account, and when I access via the web, there's no unread mail shown there either.

However, when I click on the account and I am looking under Folders, the Inbox items has a "1" indicating there's one unread mail note. I can't find any unread mail in the Inbox. I've closed the program and restarted it, and tried resyncing, but the indicator is still there.

Any ideas on where this "phantom" unread count comes from?

    :)

  2. Mail App

I use the simple Microsoft Mail application on my Surface Book. When I open the app, it says I have three unread messages in my inbox, however, I am certain that I do not. How do I get these phantom unread messages to go away?

  3. Mail App issues - unread mail color

Read emails in the Mail app does not have the highlighted bar next to the message in the inbox. Unread Mail will have a vertical blue bar or other color next to the message to indicate it is unread.

I do not use the Mail app.
I had a similar situation with my Windows Live Mail.
The icon at the taskbar indicated there was an unread mail.
I read it and then put it away or deleted it. The taskbar icon still showed 1 unread mail.
I had to click the send/Receive button to clear it.

So, in short, it can be just the matter of running "Refresh" option.
Is there such an option in Mail app?.........................Right click inside the Inbox > Refresh.
I have to ask because I have uninstalled Mail app and therefore cannot test it myself.
I don't know if that makes any sense to you using the Mail app.

One can "refresh" or "resync" in Windows 10 Mail which I've done several times and it doesn't change the issue.

I know you said " resync".
Does the "sync this view" option help at all ?

Windows 10 Mail doesn't have a "sync this view" option. There's a "yin yang" icon to click which resyncs with the IMAP server. Outside of clicking that icon, there are settings for how often you want the client to sync with the server.

Left side at the top, there is an icon represented by 2 curved arrows forming a circle. That is the "sync this view".
    You must have that.

I've had this, and to fix it, right click the inbox, remove it from Favorites, then open More, right click Inbox, and add to favorites. The phantom should be gone then.

Of course. That's what I referred to as the yin yang. It's a "sync now" and I've clicked it many times.

    Oh. Sorry.
Yin Yang ? Nice name for it.

As I said I do not use Mail app. My limited experience of this subject is not enough to help you.
    Good luck.

No problem, and I appreciate the prompt attempts to help!
I work on military tactical radios for a living and we have a button with exactly that icon on it. We affectionately call it the "yin yang" button, and I just got used to the terminology. *Smile

This worked. I did the change, and to see if it "stuck" did a resync, and exited and restarted Mail. It seems to be holding. Thanks.
