Windows 10 March 2023 Update is also causing issues (unsurprisingly)

Some Windows 10 users have encountered major issues after installing the March 2023 Patch Tuesday updates released last week. The issues do not appear widespread, but we have received a handful of reports claiming the update can’t be installed on some machines.

Microsoft published Windows 10 March 2023 Update (KB5023696) for version 22H2 and older. This is a mandatory update that will download and install automatically. Although it can be delayed, if you have the default settings, the update has likely already been installed or is awaiting installation.

A couple of users reached out to report performance, blue screen and other issues with Windows 10 March 2023 update, with one user noting the update’s performance issue has resulted in increased fan speed, which causes their device to overheat. The user contacted Microsoft and Dell support, but they never heard back.

“I gave the system several minutes to stabilize, but the fan kept running at full power. Fan operation returned to normal after I uninstalled the update (so I’m back to the Feb update). I am running a Dell 5490 AIO with Windows 10 version 22H2. I contacted Dell and Microsoft about this, but they have not yet provided any ideas on the cause/solution,” one user told us in a private message.

There are reports of Blue Screen of Death and performance issues on Feedback Hub, Reddit and Microsoft’s answer forums.

“Installation seemed to proceed normally, but shortly after landing on the home screen, there was a BSOD. Windows automatically rebooted, and it now appears to be OK. However, KB5023696 is listed as being successfully installed under Quality Updates but is not present in the list from Uninstall Updates,” one user noted in a Feedback Hub post.

Comments in our forum confirmed various installation issues with the Windows 10 March 2023 Update. Users flagged the following error messages when installing the mandatory security patch: 0x800f081f, 0x800f0984, 0x800f0922.

If you have experienced any of these problems after installing the update, you can uninstall it by following these steps:

    • Go to Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update
    • Click on View update history and then Uninstall updates
    • Select KB5001330 from the list and click Uninstall
    • Restart your device

Glitches and bugs have plagued Windows 10 updates in recent months, but Microsoft has not yet commented on these reports.

  2. New install Windows 10 (issue solved)

It's good that you're not experiencing any issues. Unfortunately many folks are, a quick Google search will show the same info im offering the OP.

    Heres a couple examples:

    Here

    Here

It's basically what I mentioned above, small issues here and there ,but nothing to end your day.. for the most part.

I know it's anecdotal, but for my experience 95% of the time it's perfectly fine. The issues I've run into wouldn't be enough for me to roll back , but they would be enough (had I not installed it yet) ,to avoid it for another couple weeks which is why I'm suggesting it to the OP

Windows 10 Fall Creators Update problems and complaints
    • Installation problems with the Fall Creators Update
    • Microsoft Edge problems with the Fall Creators Update
    • Drivers problems with the Fall Creators Update
    • Experience problems with the Fall Creators Update
keep in mind, as of recently, the FCU is installed on 5% of devices roughly.....

  3. Cumulative updates for Windows 10, and Windows 11 - March 2023

The following release notes coincide with Cumulative updates for all the supported versions of Windows, released on March 14th, 2023.

    Windows 11

    Windows 11, version 22H2: KB5023706 (OS Build 22621.1413)

    March 14, 2023—KB5023706 (OS Build 22621.1413) - Microsoft Support

This security update includes improvements that were a part of update KB5022913 (released February 28, 2023), including:

    • New! This update improves the search box experience on the taskbar. As you type in the search box, search results now appear in the search flyout box. You can also change the search experience you want for your taskbar by going to Settings > Personalization > Taskbar. For commercial customers, this update adds a new policy for IT administrators to manage how the search box on the taskbar appears in your organization. For more information, see Customizing search on the Windows 11 taskbar.

    • New! You can now access Windows Studio effects directly from quick settings on the taskbar for devices that have a supported neural processing unit (NPU). This makes it quick and easy to turn on and configure camera effects. These effects include Background blur, Eye contact, Automatic framing, and Audio effects (Voice focus). You can still access these effects in the Settings pages.
    • New! This update makes it easier to get help if you are having PC issues. You can now find Quick Assist in the Start menu’s All apps list.

    • New! This update introduces a touch-optimized taskbar for 2-in-1 devices that you can use as a tablet. There are two states of this taskbar: collapsed and expanded. To switch between the two states, swipe up and down on the bottom of your screen. When collapsed in tablet mode, the taskbar recedes to give you more screen space and keeps you from accidentally opening the taskbar. When expanded in tablet mode, the taskbar is optimized to be easier to use with touch. Your taskbar will automatically change to this optimized version when you disconnect or fold back the keyboard.

This feature only works on devices that can be used as tablets and is on by default. To change that, go to Settings > Personalization > Taskbar > Taskbar behaviors. The setting is called “Optimize taskbar for touch interactions when this device is used as a tablet.” If your company manages Windows updates for your device, this feature will be off by default. Administrators can turn it on using the new commercial control for continuous innovation.
    • New! This update provides enhanced support for braille devices. They will continue working while you switch between Microsoft Narrator and third-party screen readers. Narrator will automatically change braille drivers. For more information, see Chapter 8: Using Narrator with braille.

    • New! This update also adds support for new braille displays and new braille input and output languages in Narrator. Some of the new braille displays include the APH Chameleon, the APH Mantis Q40, the NLS eReader, and many more. For more information, see Chapter 8: Using Narrator with braille.

    • New! Windows now provides energy recommendations. If you use them, they can help to improve the energy efficiency of your PC and reduce your carbon footprint. Go to Settings > System > Power & Battery > Energy Recommendations.

    • New! For devices that are joined to Azure Active Directory (AAD), Windows now provides AI-powered recommended content on your Start menu. On the Start menu, you will find content to help you to prepare for meetings, quickly access files you're collaborating on, and more.

    • New! This update enhances the system tray. All icons will have a rounded focus and hover treatment in the lower right, including the “Show hidden icons” flyout menu. You can move icons to rearrange them in the “Show hidden icons” flyout menu or move icons to the taskbar.

    • New! This update makes voice access more flexible and supports interaction with more user interface (UI) controls. For example, voice now interacts with controls that contain:
      • Names that have numbers, such as “Click 5”
      • Names without whitespaces between them, such as “click PivotTable” or “click PivotChart”
      • Names that have special characters, such as Bluetooth & devices (“click Bluetooth and devices”) or Dial – up (“click dial hyphen up”)

    • New! Voice now supports spin controls, thumb controls, and split buttons. You interact with these controls by using the “click” command or number overlays. This update also addresses issues that affect snapping commands that snap a window left or right. Commands that move the cursor in a text box now run instantly.

    • New! This update also provides voice scrolling enhancements. You can use voice to scroll to the extreme left and right on a page. You can also use continuous scrolling to the left or right like what is already present for vertical scrolling. For more information about the new voice access commands, see Voice access command list.

    • New! This update makes enhancements to Task Manager.

  4. Windows 10 March 2023 Update is also causing issues (unsurprisingly)

    windows 10 updates-March 2018

I have March updates that will not install. The automatic updates for 2018-03 Cumulative Update for Windows 10 version 1709 for x64 based system (March KB4088776) were activated and downloaded to my computer, but they will not install on shutdown/restart.
When I check for updates, it shows that the updates are downloaded, but when I click to uninstall, there is not a date for installation. I have researched the Windows suggestions for this problem. They tell me to remove the January 2018 updates (January
KB4056892) and then reinstall the March update. When I attempted to uninstall the January update, I could see the update listed in the check for downloads screen, but when I click uninstall, the January update has a different reference number. Please advise.
I have talked to my technology department and they can't determine next steps either. VERY FRUSTRATING. I need my computer for work.
