  1. Windows 10 March updated messed up my installation.

    Hello forum.

I am literally begging you for help. Today I came home to my computer displaying a warning in message center stating my drive had errors which I had to scan. I clicked it and Windows did absolutely nothing. So I performed the scan myself.

First time, I got a message stating scan could not be run. So I tried closing it and then everything froze up, my desktop went blank and nothing responded. I had to do a hard reset and restart only to find out Windows had decided to update my machine, I thought that would be the end of my problems.

Upon Windows completing the update after numerous restarts, I was still prompted to check my disk for errors, which ended up in the scan freezing saying ''24 minutes remaining'' for over an hour. Upon trying to cancel, it just froze up and when I tried to force a restart, I noticed I could no longer use my taskbar at all, the Start Menu won't open, I cannot click the sound icon, the notification center does not respond/expand anymore. etc...

I managed to restart and Windows starting checking my drive, during the check it froze at 43% for over 40 minutes and I had to restart once again. I did SFC /SCANNOW and there were corrupted files found, but not all were fixed. These issues are also not happening in my girlfriends profile in the same computer, she does not have any issues and is able to open start menu and gets all relevant notifications and use the taskbar to its fullest.

I am also not able to use a system restore point because there are system file corruptions and the error checking must be completed but it never will because it gets frozen at a 20 minute remaining mark.

Can someone please help me for the love of all that is good? I have no idea what else to do and restoring the installation is not an option, I do not have any backup drives and cannot afford reinstalling all the programs on this machine.

Thank you so much for your help.

    :)

  2. March update messes up video apps

I use multiple video editing and conversion applications, and ALL of them started crashing upon opening a video file. Once this Windows update is uninstalled, the applications work absolutely fine.

    Apps I'm using/tried using:

    Boilsoft video splitter

    Any Video Converter

    Freemake video converter

    HitFilm 4 Express

March update messes up video apps

Update KB4013429 has messed up my video apps. CompPkgSup is the failing module. Symptoms: 1) using File Explorer to view a folder containing VOB and IFO files causes File Explorer to disappear after several seconds. 2) Nero DVD burner similarly kills
itself when attempting to display a video folder's contents. Uninstalling the update successfully returns to good behavior but automatic update messes things up again.

Are you sure that it is not some third party software that you have installed.

  6. Hi, Thanks for the response. I appreciate it.

Am I correct when thinking this process will only modify my windows installation and settings/registry while leaving my files and programs left as is?

This is like the time I first upgraded to Windows 10 In which I was able to finish the upgrade and continue to do what I was doing in Windows 7, right?

To do an in place upgrade, or repair install, you must download the Windows 10 ISO using the Windows 10 media creation tool.

If you do a Google search, type, Windows 10 media creation tool. It should bring up something for you to download it from the Microsoft website.

You then must burn the ISO to a DVD or copy to an empty USB flash drive.

You won't be able to use your computer during the installation process, however, if your drive was checking for errors, and keeps freezing while checking for errors, then there could be a chance that your hard disk is failing, or has bad sectors and will need replacing soon

    Hi,

I am able to check for errors just fine. It's not checking for errors when the processes freezes. It's when restarting to fix the errors that the process gets stuck at 40 something % something else that happens with the drive after this update is that it is stuck at 100% usage at all times, it actually goes down only when checking for errors. Other than that, there is no ticking, or any other strange noises comming from it. It's a fairly new 4 year old hard drive.

When you say that you restart, do you mean you are doing an elevated command prompt and doing a

    Chkdsk C: /F /R

If you use /R, it will hang and stay at the same percentage until the scan completes. My 1 TB drive hanged at 22% for over 3 hours, but the scan still completed.

  10. Hello,

No. I use the in built disk checking tool (Go to My Computer -> right click HDD -> properties -> tools -> check disk for errors. After checking for errors, I get back a result prompting me to restart my computer to fix the errors during restart.

This is when the progress hangs, and my HDD light stays lit without blinking at all.

Open an elevated command prompt and type in what I had typed in above. Click Y to accept the scan during restart.

How big is your drive? 500 GB, 1TB? 2TB? While the scan is going, if it stops at 40% it's OK. Depending on the size, it can take between 1 to 4 hours to complete. As long as the spinning dots are spinning, it's scanning. The light won't blink while fully lit when its checking for bad sectors.

When other user account in the same computer has no issue except yours, that means your own user account is corrupted.
Create another user account with the same privileges as yours > logon to it > and see if everything is working fine.
If so, that confirms the corruption.
Go back to your corrupt account > backup what you want to keep > then delete the corrupt account. This account is no use to you.

  14. Okay, I will give that a shot. The Drive I have the OS installed in is 500GB, but you do have a point, the dots were spinning all the time, I just assume it was taking an excessive amount of time.

Would you still recommend an in place upgrade instead of allowing it to check?

  15. Thank you, could you help me with information on what sort of information must be backed up in a User Account or would be lost if I were to delete it?
