Sorry, I was not careful in what I wrote.
I was referring to personal files that you want to keep. ie. pictures, documents, videos etc etc.
You will have to reinstall your 3rd party programs. That's a price to pay, unfortunately.

I recommend you check first before repair install. But also do another user account as well

  3. Ah okay. I was going through the in place upgrade through Get Windows 10 as it was much simpler than creating a bootable drive.

................. I was still prompted to check my disk for errors.................
That's asking you to do a disk check. Do so as suggested by Imaneke.
Right click at Start button > select Command Prompt (Admin) > in the flashing prompt, copy/paste this.............
    chkdsk /f/r
    > Enter
A messge will say (paraphrasing) that it cannot be done now but would you like to do it on restart > type Y as in yes > exit command prompt > restart computer.
Disk check will begin on restart. It will take some time to run. It will give you a report at the end and then take you back to your desktop.

................. not happening in my girlfriends profile in the same computer...............
That suggests you have a corrupt profile (account).
Create a new user account as I suggested earlier in this thread.

If the above 2 fail to fix the problem, then do an upgrade install also known as repair install.
Use this Tech Bench link and download the Windows 10 iso file:

    https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/soft...brrWLRbagYCa0w

scroll down to Select Edition > click the pointer at the right and select Windows 10 > click Confirm.
click the pointer and select Language > make sure you pick the same language the computer is now running > click Confirm
select the bit version, 32 or 64-bit. Make sure you select the same bit version as the computer is now running.
at the bottom, click the pointer next to Save > click Save As > navigate to a folder of your choice > click the chosen folder > click Save
The iso will start downloading to your chosen folder.
When it is done, go to that folder > open the folder > right click at the iso file > click Mount > click Setup.exe
    Installation will begin.
It will allow you to keep you files, settings and apps.
    No product key is required.
    Activation will be automatic.

  6. Thanks. I m running the chkdsk on startup but this time it got stuck on 12% instead of 42% but the circle is still spinning. One huge difference i noticed is that my hard drive stopped being at 100% usage and went down to normal levels. I noticed that when i was looking for files to backup.

I will leave it overnight to see if the scan and repair does its thing and update you if there is an change or if I perform the upgrade install.

EDIT: If I perform the upgrade install, would I still need to delete the user profile, or would that only be necessary if the upgrade install does not work?

  7. Okay, I left it running overnight and woke up to a message stating Windows could not start properly last time and I had to restart. I selected the option to restart and got a message stating disc scan/repair had been completed.

I managed to boot into Windows just fine, but the only issue I am facing now is the problem with the task bar as mentioned before, and random spikes from my HDD being locked at 100% for a couple of minutes before leveling to normal usage.

Now, I believe it would just be better to do an in place upgrade, but I do have the last question because it seems the issue is directly related to the profile being damaged, will the profile be fixed with the in place upgrade or will I have to ultimately delete the profile even if I do the in place upgrade?

    Thanks!

Windows 10 March updated messed up my installation.

Why don't you create a new user account and find out if the new account performs as expected ?
Why jump to repair install without trying a much simpler and less time consuming method ?

  9. Because I know the new profile will work, but I currenlty do not have the time to reinstall every single piece of software in that user profile. As far as I know, the only process which is able to keep that, is the in place upgrade.

A repair install will take about 2 to 3 hours unless you have ssd installed.
It's your decision. Choose the path you want.
    Good luck.

  11. Thanks! As long as the in place upgrade reinstall also fixes profile issues. It's much better than spending two days reconfiguring software. :S
