Windows 10: Windows 10 May 2020 2004 Update - Pending Restart - Block install

I've been going through a loop of failed installs of the May 2020 update for weeks. It downloads and tries to installs, blue screens and then kills Windows. I have had to rollback the feature updates several times already from the recovery console.


I have both the Realtek Bluetooth and Nvidia GeForce GT 630M devices on my laptop, and both of these are listed as open issues:

I thought the 2020 update was being blocked from installing, but apparently not, and now my computer is awaiting a restart with the May 2020 update now pending install. Using the settings to prevent the update would seem to be now a case of "closing the stable door after the horse has bolted".


Is there any way to delete this update from my machine now it is in the "Pending Restart" status?

How to get the Windows 10 May 2020 Update version 2004

As I said in post #932, MS have been tweaking this aspect of windows update over the past year or so. I was writing from memory, as I usually click the manual 'Check for updates'. That seems to be accepted as permission to download and install anything that is found.

So I have tested exactly what happens if you let Windows Update check automatically for itself. I have VMs of both 1909 Home and 2004 Home available to test.

1909 Home: after an automatic check WU will list the updates as 'Status: Pending download' with a 'Download' button beneath them.





2004 Home: after an automatic check will download automatically and list the updates as 'Status: Pending install' with an 'Install now' button beneath them.






I suspect that if you leave it long enough at 'Pending install' 2004's WU may eventually install them automatically, perhaps outside active hours? I'll leave it to see, but I may not know the result of that test for a day or so *Wink


edit: well, that didn't take too long. Left to it's own devices 2004's WU gave up waiting and installed a few hours later.

Known and Resolved issues for Windows 10 May 2020 Update version 2004

Yes. I'm in the UK, two out of my six machines were offered it immediately it was released.





Not all machines are being offered the 2004 update yet. As with all previous feature updates, there are some known blocking issues for particular hardware/software. Affected machines are blocked from being offered the May 2020 Update until Microsoft have resolved the issues. Check yours against the list in post #1.

When an issue has been resolved, then the block will be lifted and it will be offered to those machines. Manually upgrading using the install media made by the Media Creation Tool bypasses the checks for blocking issues, you do so at your own risk. Safest to wait until it is offered.
