Windows 10: windows 10 may update consistently causing 0xc0000185 error on laptop

My copy of windows has tried twice now to install the may update at which point the computer fails on reboot a couple times with the 185 error. The failed update recovery mode then starts and reverses the patch and everything is hunky dory. WTF is this patch doing?
