Windows 10 Mouse and Keyboard not working

I have been plagued by this problem and determined a number of aspects with regard to this issue. The problem is NOT hardware (mouse or keyboard) or mouse and keyboard drivers. The issue is the result of all the computer's system USB ports turning off in the latter part of the Win 10 boot. If one gets into Windows and checks device manager, all the system USB ports are not functioning due to error code 52 which corresponds to Windows NOT accepting USB driver file signature (there is no rhyme or reason for this!!). No, I don't know how to permanently solve this problem at this juncture. It also occurs for bizarre reasons since my system was working fine prior to installing graphics driver and then failed afterward (graphics driver files should have nothing in common with USB driver files!!). My system also worked fine for a few weeks until an automatic Windows 10 update (post anniversary update) and failed miserably afterward with this USB issue. I had to go to a prior restore point to get it back but since it will update again, the same problem will eventually occur (I have to install my hard drive into a different computer to get it working again because my current computer does not have PS2 mouse and keyboard ports). SO, AT THIS JUNCTURE, I HAVE GONE BACK TO WINDOWS 7 BECAUSE WINDOWS 10 #$$@@@S DUE TO THIS ISSUE AND OTHER FEATURES I DON'T LIKE (You now have to be in Win 10 to get to safe mode but if you can't get into windows you can't access safe mode and that's CATCH 22 in the purest form!!

So, you can get into windows via PS2 mouse and keyboard (cause it's not USB). If you have as separate USB card (especially if it's USB3) they MAY work but I'm not sure.

If I get into Windows (for example via PS2 hardware) I can access Trouble Shoot via Recovery in Windows 10 and disable file signature checking (number 7 option in restart with diagnostics) and, on reboot, all the previously bad USB ports will work again. Unfortunately, that method of disabling file signature only lasts one restart. There a SUPPOSED ways to permanently disable file signature checking in Windows 10 but that does NOT work to switch non working USB ports to working status.

  2. I, myself had this same problem with the current build. After searching on forums and on YouTube I was not successfull. You can try this and I can almost guaruntee that it will work. You are probarly going to be very upset with yourself but here it goes.

Hold the right shift key on your keyboard for about 10 seconds in. Let go of the key. Now press numlock to see that it is responding.

I got most of this from several posts:
    • I unplugged both the USB keyboard and the wireless mouse cable USB plug.
    • I powered down the machine using the power switch.
    • I attached an old PS2-connector mouse (from my Linux Mint machine)
    • I powered up. The PS2 mouse worked.
    • I assumed it was not a USB driver issue, because I could see that my 2TB external drive was attached.
    • I plugged in the keyboard. It worked
    • I plugged in the Logitech wireless mouse antenna. The Logitech mouse worked.
    • I powered down, unplugged the old PS2 mouse, and powered up.
    • Everything works.

Windows 10 Mouse and Keyboard not working

[/quote] ^^^^ This solved my Windows 10 (desktop) startup problem... last time during startup it would just hang when USB mouse and keyboard (Logitech) is connected. My Logitech G510 would have no lights on and mouse would not respond. After I disabled the fast startup everything loaded as normal.

Please try... much more efficient and easy compare to the other steps listed here. Most likely the fast startup is not loading all the required drivers to make the USB mouse and keyboard work as normal.

After did the above, I have boot up 3 times just fine in the course of 3 different days. *Thumbs

OMG! THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU! I have been messing with this problem for weeks now with my laptop-loading unloading drivers flashing BIOS, etc., etc, messing with the virtual keyboard and was finally able to get to where the touch pad was operational again and I could type by holding down the num lock key. I had plugged in an external keyboard and could use that, but you're not going to lug that around. this fix worked! Allelujah!!!!!!

Hey guys. I thank you all for sharing your steps. I did most of them.

The issue, no keyboard and mouse in win 10 after replacing cpu cooler.

Saw in davice manager the "!" In usb section. Plugged in ps2 keyboard. Tried to update, uninstall reinstall. Nothing worked until i was going to give up, call it a night, and drink a case of beer until i tried one last final thing.

    Solution:

After a day of troubleshooting i tried to boot into windows with no peripherals whatsoever.

Once fully loaded, i just plugged in my mouse and keyboard. Then it worked.

Looked at myself in the mirror and called the reflection an idiot

Windows 10 Mouse and Keyboard not working

I had the same problem. I reinstalled the drivers, did all manner of experimentation to try for a fix, I finally discovered the actual problem. Win 10 apparently RANDOMLY had turned on "Filter Keys" in "Ease of Access". I discovered this when I inadvertently held down a key while carrying the notebook. It's not a "delay" - the keyboard simply won't react unless you hold down each key for a second! It looks like the keyboard is disabled. But it still works fine... Ease of Access-turn off filter keys. To check it, simply hold down a key and see if it eventually reacts.

I apologize if this fix has been offered already, but I didn't read through every single response.

I've been plagued by this issue for some time now, but going through the Windows Repair (by unplugging the machine on startup cuz I don't have a PS/2 mouse & kb) and doing a system restore to a point where it would work was a start.

However I found on another site (Fix issue: USB Ports not Working in Windows 10 - Driver Easy suggestion #2) a fix that worked for me and I wanted to share here. Basically follow the quoted thread, but additionally I had goto the Universal Serial Bus controllers > USB Root Hub > Properties > Power Management > Uncheck "all the computer to turn off this device to save power" option. Thanks to savvasferrari for the initial leg work. Not sure if this was the actual fix or a combination, but after 3 reboots its working perfectly.

    HOPEFULLY THIS HELPS SOMEONE ELSE!

    Hi everyone,

After searching through the net after the same problem, I was perturbed by the responses that tells me to "go and click on...", but how can you do it without access to your mouse and keyboard !!

So, for posterity, I want to give my solution to this, in case it may help someone that falls into this pit. In my case, it was an installation of a bluetooth driver that totally blows off my USB drivers, and guess what ? My mouse and keyboard are in USB...

Hopefuly, I had activated "Remote access in RDP" with my win 10 computer. So what I simply did is take control on my computer in remote desktop and delete the faulty driver. After a reboot all went fine !

Damn... I do not needed that, 2 hours lost for that simple solution :-/.

Hope you will not loose that precious time *Smile.

    Bye.

Use the keyboard that you can make appear on your desktop. Start with Cortana and use a microphone. It can be found in "accessories "in settings

Thanks a lot for this. A friend with Windws 10 <spit> could no longer use his beloved PS/2 mouse. The removing the driver trick worked a charm!

    What happened to me was...

I got a trial of Windows 10 Enterprise and installed as a dual boot alongside Windows 7. Once getting through the installation, I downloaded an installed Chrome browser, and with it, found my video card driver and installed it. At that point, I rebooted, and came up to the lock screen with the pretty picture and the clock on it. My mouse and keyboard didn't work, I tried hooking up corded mice/keyboards, changing BIOS settings, repairing/reinstalling Windows (which I did three times) all to no avail.

Here's how I fixed it. I booted from the Windows 10 install disc I made from Microsoft's Win10 .iso, and formatted the partition I made for Windows 10 and installed it there for a third time. After the installation, I went into Explorer, right-clicked "This PC" in the navigation pane, clicked "Remote settings", then clicked the option to "Allow remote connections to this computer" and left the check box below it checked. Then, because I am on a domain at my work (home users needn't bother with this, you can't anyways lol), I joined my computer to the domain. Before restarting, I pressed the Windows key, typed "cmd" and pressed enter, then typed "ipconfig" and pressed enter. I wrote down what was displayed to the right of IPv4 Address (should be something similar to 192.168.1.XX), and then restarted the computer.

On bootup, lo and behold, can't use keyboard or mouse. I went to another computer and logged on, pressed the Windows key, then typed "mstsc" and pressed enter. In the blank for "Computer:" I typed the address I wrote down and clicked "Connect". Once remoted into the problematic computer remotely, I opened Windows Explorer, right-clicked "This PC" in the navigation pane, and clicked "Manage". Then under Computer Management -> System Tools, I clicked "Device Manager".

In Device Manager, the category "Universal Serial Bus controllers" was already expanded, and 4 items were listed below it: Intel(R) USB 3.0 eXtensible Host Controller - 1.0 (Microsoft), Intel(R) USB 3.1 eXtensible Host Controller - 1.0 (Microsoft), and USB Root Hub (xHCI) was listed twice. 2 of those items had the down arrow icon on them indicating they were unloaded: Intel(R) USB 3.0 eXtensible Host Controller - 1.0 (Microsoft), and one of the entries for USB Root Hub (xHCI). I right-clicked each, and selected "Enable", then a bunch of entries populated under "Universal Serial Bus controllers". Upon exiting the "Computer Management" window, I believe it asked me to reboot, which I did. I then went back over to the PC that had rebooted, and logged on just fine using my mouse and keyboard.

    I hope this helps someone!
