  1. Windows 10 not shutting down correctly usng power button if screen asleep

Hope someone can help with this.

I have a number of systems in remote locations that use the power button to initiate the shutdown of the system. This is automated by a device external to the PC. After sufficient time to allow the system to gracefully shut down, this device also removes power from the PC. The systems also have a screen attached that is set to sleep after a short period of inactivity.

I have noticed that recently that if the monitor is asleep, the power button action does not initiate a shutdown, but wakes the monitor up. The system is then crashed with an unclean shutdown when the power is removed from the system. While I can set the systems to only set the screen to a blank screensaver to get around this, I am wanting to have the screen off (asleep) when not in use for security reasons.

Is there any way to ensure windows shuts down cleanly from a single power button action after the monitor has gone to sleep?

    Any assistance is appreciated.

    :)

  2. The light on the power button stays on even after shut down.

    Hi,

Thank you for posting your query on Microsoft Community.

As per your description, I understand that the light on the power button stays on even after shut down.

We will assist you to resolve the issue.

This issue may arise due to various reasons:

    • System not properly shut down or might be in sleep mode.

    • Power cord connected to the device.

    • Change in the settings.
I would appreciate if you could answer few questions to narrow down to the issue.

    • What is the make and model of the computer?

    • Did you make any recent changes to the settings?

    • Does the CPU fan spins after the shutdown?
As an initial troubleshooting step, (if you are using a laptop).

Unplug the charger from the lap top and check if the issue persists and also try to shut down from the lock screen.

If the issue persists, I suggest you to run the Power troubleshooter and check if it helps.

Follow these steps to run Power troubleshooter:

    1. Type troubleshooting in the search bar.

    2. Select Troubleshooting.

    3. Select View all on the top left corner.

    4. Click on Power.

    5. Follow the on-screen instructions to run the troubleshooter.

    6. Check if issue persists.

Hope the information helps. Let us know if you need further assistance. We will be happy to help.

    Thank you.

  4. Windows 10 not shutting down correctly usng power button if screen asleep

Unable to shut down using the power button.

Hi Nicola. I'm Greg, an installation specialist and 9 year Windows MVP, here to help you.

Where are you accessing the Power button: in the Start menu just above the Start button, or the physical power button on the PC.

For the PC power button you need to program it to Shut down when you press it at Settings > System > Power & Sleep > Additional Power Settings > Choose what Power buttons do.

For shutting down from Windows, first try turning off Fast Startup at Settings > System > Power & Sleep > Additional Power Settings > Choose what Power buttons do > Change settings that are unavailable > uncheck Fast Startup.

From the Windows Start menu Power button, try hibernate to see if that works.

For deeper system performance problems go over this checklist to make sure the install is set up correctly, optimized for best performance, and any needed repairs get done:

    http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/wiki...

Start with Step 4 to turn off Startup freeloaders which can conflict and cause issues, then Step 7 to check for infection the most thorough way, then step 10 to check for damaged System Files. Then continue with the other steps to go over your install most
    thoroughly.

I hope this helps. Feel free to ask back any questions and let us know how it goes. I will keep working with you until it's resolved.
