Windows 10: Windows 10 not shutting down..

Ever since I downloaded Windows 10 on my Asus computer it does NOT shut down all the way. When I click on shut down from the menu, it shuts down briefly but turns on immediately and stays on sleep mode or hybernation mode.

Hi Michael, a common enough problem, it will require a registry fix . . .

Click your Start Button, type regedit and hit Enter - this will open the Registry Editor

In the left pand, navigate to:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE - SYSTEM - CurrentControlSet - Control

Then in the Right Pane double click WaitToKillServiceTimeout and change the value to 1000

Click OK

Then back in the left Pane, close up all those folders (keys) again (click in the left pane and press left arrow on your keyboard a few times)

In the left pand, navigate to:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER - Control Panel - Desktop

Then in the right pane, right click in the blank space and choose New - String Value

Name the String Value WaitToKillServiceTimeout

Then double click WaitToKillServiceTimeout

Set its value to 1000

Save and close the Registry Editor

That's It!

Thank you for the information. I have followed your instructions and the computer is now shutting down correctly.

 

I have a similar issue on an Asus laptop, has been there all the time since installing Windows 10 and remained through all Insider build upgrades. At the moment running Build 14322. Let's hope someone comes up with an idea.

In my case shutdown leaves the laptop partially on, the power led on, and I have to hard reset, press and hold the power button down for a few seconds. Interesting is that a shutdown works a short time after Windows has been booted; if I shutdown within a few minutes after booting, laptop will shutdown normally.

I have given up and decided to live with this, Asus support is worthless. I have learned to shutdown with restart: when shutting down I restart, and when Windows reboots to sign-in screen I finally shutdown. This always works.
