Windows 10: Windows 10 October 2018 Update replaces Skype UWP application with new Skype 8

Microsoft has been working on releasing a new update for its Skype UWP app for Windows 10 users. The brand new Skype app will replace the existing Skype UWP app.

The Redmond Giant yesterday released the Windows 10 October 2018 update to all Windows 10 users globally. The latest Windows 10 update replaces the company’s Universal Skype application with the new Skype 8 version.

The new Skype 8 is already available as a standalone desktop application for Windows 10 users. The new version of the Skype app is a cross-platform application which brings new features like Call recording, Private encrypted conversations.

Windows 10 users will also be able to SMS Connect with Android phones from the brand new Skype app. The Skype application also supports add-ins for Spotify and Giphy which gives access to third-party services directly from the Skype conversations.

The new Skype 8 version introduced with the Windows 10 October 2018 Update now also supports add-ins for the company’s Microsoft To-Do application. Users will now be able to open the tasks pane to manage their to-do lists along with creating a new task directly from any Skype message after logging in to the Microsoft To Do within Skype.

Another new feature of the new Skype 8 version is the support for integration with the Windows 10 Share charm, MyPeople. The Skype application will also be able to receive notifications even when the app isn’t running.

Microsoft also confirmed that the new Skype application will be receiving regular feature updates (probably at the same time on other platforms) to bring it on par in terms of features which are already available on the company’s Skype Classic application which will be discontinued soon.

Skype for Windows 8 Unveiled

Skype announced Skype for Windows 8 today, bringing together popular Skype features and the new design of Windows 8.

The release focuses on delivering an experience that is simpler, faster and easier to use. Skype for Windows 8 includes top Skype features like IM, audio and video calls. It also takes advantage of some of the new features and functionality of Windows 8 that put people front and center; including integration in to the People Hub, ability to pin favorite contacts as a tile for easy access and the Skype Live Tile that shows messages and notifications right on the Start Screen.

Skype for Windows 8 will be available on October 26. You can find it on your new Windows 8 device and or download it from the Windows Store.

New Skype Version Released

Although, not one of my favourite programs, Skype is considered a high priority software application. The latest 3.5.0.239 release, is now available for download and it fixes some major bugs:

• bugfix: Links with invalid % encodings were executed
• bugfix: Data execution protection may have crashed Skype
• bugfix: Pressing escape did not end call
• Security improvements to ensure it is no longer possible to shut down Skype from a web page
