Windows 10: Windows 10 OEM key won't work on Windows 10

So, my friend recently bought a laptop and ****ed it up. Initially, its OS was Windows 10. But then, I corrupted its OS so I tried to fix it using a recovery media created using a working windows 10 (previously windows 8). As the fixing goes, I ended up choosing the reset(or refresh option? i am not sure) I am expecting that it will reset back to windows 10. However, when the process completed, the OS was windows 8. The same with the previous version of the Windows 10 (that I used to create the recovery media).

I downloaded an iso of windows 10 home and installed it. I skipped the input of serial key (although I have an OEM serial key for win 10). After the installation, obviously the OS is not activated. I tried to input the legit OEM key but it doesn't work. Where did I go wrong?

Windows 10 Home Upgrade to Pro using OEM Disc and key

I have the same problem. I have a Windows 10 Pro OEM key and can't enter it directly to force the upgrade.

I read that even if I follow your suggestion, I won't be able to activate the Win 10 Pro (obtained via your easy upgrade method) with my OEM key.

Can you confirm that the OEM key will work to activate the Windows 10 Pro obtained via easy upgrade?

Windows 10 Unexpected shutdown on start up

OK, so i figured it out myself

Found the logfile in "C:\Windows\Minidump".

You need the Windows Development Kit to open it and a bit of googling to understand it.

Found out that a Daemon driver caused an error. Removed Daemon but this didn't solve it. (ps: Daemon itself worked normally).

I let hibernate my computer again and found another error with sptd2.sys: SCSI Pass Through Direct layer

More google and ended up on the duplexsecure site. Downloaded the W10 version and voila: problem fixed.

For the Windows support team: It would be really helpfull if you could pass problems to a more skilled helpdesk who can do more than proposing the standard solutions in case those won't work.

Once you have windows 10 on your pc, you don't need to enter the key again.

Do a clean install and when it asks for the key, don't enter it as it had already been associated with your hardware.

 

If the firmware has a Windows 10 Home key, it should not prompt for a key... What's amiss is the edition the key is for.

Run ShowKey and check the edition of the OEM key.

(However, if by OEM, you mean system builder then check the edition of that as well)

No, it is not a system builder. Its DM version

It says that you have installed Win 10 on a system that was NOT activated in the first place.

Was the Win 8 activated before you started installing Win 10 ?

 

I think his issue was, when he clean installed Windows 10, he installed 10 Home, not 10 Home SL. Then did the upgrade to 10586. 10 Home wouldn't activate with the SL key so the upgrade stayed un activated. If he starts over and clean installs with 10 Home SL (10686) it will use the OEM embedded key and activate. The Windows 10 that was previously Windows 8 is another totally different PC he used to try to create recovery media on. That's how I read it anyway.

 

OK. I was looking at it differently.
I based on what the first screenshot says to the OP...... that he tried to activate Win 10 on a previously Win 8 OS which had not been activated.

 

He was right. This is what happened.

Another question, would the language matter? What if the language of the initial windows 10 is different from I will install? Will it result to errors?

 

I'm thinking yes? If you mean created on a PC running a different language than the PC you intend to use it on.

 

I mean regarding the windows 10 home single language, which is the original os of my laptop. Will differences in language will cause the SL OEM key to be rejected?

 

Single language keys are universal... It doesn't matter which language of SL you install, the key applies to all of that edition.
