    Windows 10 on 2004 PC?

I've been experimenting with my old 2004 Windows XP PC. This has an ASUS A8N-SLI, motherboard (NVidia NForce 4 based), 1.1GHZ AMD CPU, 2GB RAM and a 200GB hard drive. I clean installed Windows 7 Ultimate via a cheap licence and it works quite well.

In theory, I understand it may be still possible to perform a free upgrade to Windows 10. I'm using the 32 bit version of Windows 10 since I already spotted AMD CPUs of 2004 vintage are incompatible with 64 bit Windows 10. I'm wondering how the performance and response in Windows 10 will compare with Windows 7 which is quite reasonable. Has anyone installed Windows 10 on a 2004 vintage PC with 2GB RAM and what was your experience?

    :)

Is Quicken 2004 compatible with Windows 10

Can anyone advise on whether Quicken Premier 2004 will run on Windows 10?

Quicken no longer supports 2004 and therefore cannot advise. Any assistance would be appreciated

I currently running Quicken on Windows 7 pro

    Thank you

  3. I NEED HELP HERE GUYS MY N900 CAMERA KEEPS FAILING IN OPERATION

    ooooh.. freaking ouch!

The camera module is removable / replaceable.. however, I'm concerned that the camera may be working, but the device it interfaces with on the main PCB is defective..

The fact you had your device repaired by someone other than Nokia doesn't help.. If it was Nokia, I'd be sending it right back.. they can't argue that it isn't working.. they'd have to fix it..

The main PCB in the N900 has most of the hardware.. the USB connector is soldered directly onto this PCB.. and the camera module plugs directly onto this PCB.. If they repaired this PCB (by attaching a new USB connector) then it is possible they damaged something
else, but I doubt it is a refurbished part..

however, you could tell because the IMEI number of your phone (*#06#) will match before you sent it in.. If you still have the original box the N900 arrived in, the original IMEI will be there..

If they replaced the main PCB with a refurb it will have a new IMEI number.. This goes for Bluetooth and WLAN MAC addresses too.. They're all unique to the mainboard, and not really transferable..

They might've removed the camera module and damaged it, I suppose..

this is really tough.. I'm not sure how Nokia's warranty would be affected by a third party repairing the phone..

the warranty would be valid in the original country of origin, but its a problem getting it repaired if you're not in that country as you've found out..

First, I'd check if the IMEI is the same as it was before the repair.. if not, tell them they replaced one broken part with another.. try again..

If they are the same, tell them they botched the repair.. try again..

but as an end user, I'm not sure what else you could do..

I would try installing PR1.0 though.. flash the phone completely.. this is the OLDEST firmware.. Then install the next version up (2.2009.51)..

Something strange like the firmware on the main PCB differs from the firmware on the removable camera module?! The N900 is not particularly tolerant of differing firmware versions on each of its internal parts..

Downgrading the firmware usual screws things up (wifi/gsm stop working!) but it might help in your case..

    Windows 10 on 2004 PC?

My experience is that on lower end machines the improvement gained from Windows 10 over Windows 7 is more noticeable than on higher end machines. I would say try it. What have you got to lose, but a little bit of time?

The problem is only 2GB RAM. Tablets get away with that as any pagefiling is done to its steady state hard drive. So if you cannot add ram, next best option is to use an ssd but if pc is that olde, it might have the older ide rather than sata interface, and virtually all ssds will be sata or newer interfaces.

Another issue is if you can get suitable drivers.

Also, you need to to check if the CPU is nx capable (use coreinfo to find out or look on web). If it is not, you cannot install windows 10.

In the end, I think it is bit of a stretch putting Windows 10 on such an old device, but if nx capable, you can always try.

    Hi there

actually on OLDER machines if you can fit an SSD the benefits will be immediate and probably even better than on modern machines.

You could also install any Linux version on an external USB2 device connected to an SSD via a SATA_USB2 connector and install a Windows VM on the SSD.

Device will boot fine -then start the Windows 10 VM and you might even get better response time than a Native install on the laptop's internal HDD.

Note though if the CPU is not 64 bit capable you will need if using VMWARE for VM's to restrict yourself to rel 10 or earlier,

If your device has in its BIOS VT_X enabled (intel VM) you can actually run a 64 bit GUEST OS (I.e a VM) on a 32 bit machine --although Guest + Host memory cannot exceed 4GB RAM.

On that old machine though the 2GB of RAM will be a problem --I'd see if you can find some (probably DDR2 Laptop RAM) where you could replace the 2GB ram with 4GB -- you probably will only have 1 slot for this but it's easily done on older laptops --they open up a lot easier than modern ones. !!!

    cheers

    Windows 10 on 2004 PC?

The PC has a socket 939 single core Athlon 64 which has the NX bit. The PC does have a SATA interface. I wasn't planning to spend money on a SSD but I see I could get a 120GB SSD for c. £50 and it can be reused. I'll try the tip for CleanMem in post 4. I have have 4x memory slots fitted with DDR 400 512MB modules. It would be possible to fit 4GB but the cost of c. £100 is too high for such an old PC.

Turn that machine into a file server and don't throw any money at it...

Of course, just install it on a trial basis first. If it does not work due to lack of drivers, no point in spending any dosh to upgrade.

My test machine (system two below) is slightly newer vintage, but at 1GB RAM is theoretically below minimum spec* (2GB) for Windows 10. It's now running (x86) Fall Creators Update without a problem - and it's more responsive with any version of 10 than it is when I restore its Win7 image. It's actually quite useable for basic Office tasks and browsing, but as it's main purpose is as a test bed a little thrashing of the swapfile is unimportant to me.

Interesting you find W10 faster than W7! I'll save a Reflect image of my W7 installation once configured today then try the W10 update.

    Windows 10 on 2004 PC?

Mainly seems to be that apps like Office appear to open quicker in W10, that and there are less pauses in W10 while (presumably) the swapfile sorts itself out - W7 seemed prone to brief hangs at times for no obvious reason.

    Success *Smile

I now have Win 10 Pro running on my 13 year old PC! I had two failed update attempts which I solved by disabling unneeded peripherals in the BIOS and ensured I used either MS drivers or the very latest Win 7 drivers before upgrading. I just ran setup.exe from a USB stick created by the Media Creation Tool and Win 10 auto activated. The PC chugs along OK so long as you do one thing at a time. I haven't 'optimised' it yet.

This PC originally had Win XP. I clean installed Win 7 Ultimate using a cheap licence then upgraded to Win 10 Pro as above.

I have a couple of queries:
    • Can I go back to Win 7 after a couple of weeks or is my licence key now tied to this PC on Win 10?
    • I found some really cheap PC3200 memory. Will MS activation complain if I increase the RAM to 4GB?

I've posted some screen shots as proof.

    Well done!

You can revert to 7 if you wish, the Windows 7 product key remains valid, if you do not wish to continue using Windows 10.

A 4GB RAM upgrade will not affect activation, and will allow the system to run better. A SSD upgrade would make a big difference.

Imaging your current Windows 10 installation using Macrium Reflect or similar will allow you to speedily return to Windows 10 in the future on this machine if wished.
